Agger’s Classy Display Just a Taste of Things to Come

|

Dirk_Kuyt_Team_Mates_Daniel_AggerDaniel Agger has certainly been one of Rafa Benitez’s best signings since his arrival from Brondby in the 2006 January transfer window.  The Dane struggled with injuries in his first season at the club but since starting the 2006 Community Shield, the classy defender has established himself not only as Liverpool’s first-choice centre back but also one of the best players in the world in his position.

Agger has become a fan favourite on Merseyside with his unique attacking style of play adapting well with the more casual, laid-back defensive style of Slovakian Martin Skrtel as the two have formed a solid partnership.  Watching the pair play together reminds me of the days of watching both Stephan Henchoz and Sami Hyypia who themselves formed a water-tight defensive shield to goalkeepers Sander Westerveld and Jerzy Dudek.

Agger’s life off the pitch is not typical to that of your average footballer.  Agger keeps his affairs away from the pitch completely separate from his life on the pitch and has made himself a successful entrepreneur by owning a number of successful businesses’ including two restaurants in the City and a pub back home in his native Denmark.

Agger himself has admitted that his form over the past few months has not been his best and he feels that injuries have hampered his progress at the club.

Indeed Agger has suffered his fair-share of horrific injury problems.  In September 2007 the Dane suffered a broken second metatarsal resulting in the Dane missing the entire campaign and when Agger did return he freely admitted that he felt he was starting his Liverpool career from scratch.  He has also suffered a frequent number of back problems which has led to an inconsistent run in the team.

Agger though is slowly getting back to his best form and his impressive performance against Sunderland this weekend proved that he is more than willing to throw himself back into the thick of things once again as he aims to form a solid partnership with Jamie Carragher from now until the end of the season with Martin Skrtel currently out injured.

Despite his consistent injury problems, Agger is certainly proving one of the best Benitez purchases and reds fans will hope he remains at the club for many more years to come.
