Liverpool & Chelsea – An intriguing scenario on the cards?

|

Rafa-BenitezThis weekend’s upcoming clash between Liverpool and Manchester United at Old Trafford got me thinking a little further afield to the reds penultimate game of the season against Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea.

If the reds had by then secured fourth place (which I grant you right now is extremely unlikely) and Manchester United are scrapping it out with Chelsea for the Premier league title, is there the smallest of likelihoods that Rafa Benitez may rest a few of his star-players for the final game of the season at Anfield?

After all there’s nothing less the red half of Merseyside would like to see than Alex Ferguson’s men claiming their 19th championship and thereby taking them above Liverpool on league championships won, which would then make them the most successful team in England.

I am not for one minute suggesting that Rafa being the dignified and self-respected man he is purposely hand Chelsea the league title by allowing his team to be beaten, it would however make an interesting scenario especially when you think back to the run-ins that both Ferguson and Benitez have had over the past five years.

As well as that, nothing would please Kopites more than to revel in the fact that their team put paid to United’s attempt at a 19th championship.

Benitez’s first priority will of course be helping guide his reds side to that priceless fourth-place spot and it is unlikely with the way the league is going this year that any of the four challenging teams will have it wrapped up by the penultimate weekend.  It will however be a worry for a certain man, 30 miles down the East-Lancs road, and Ferguson will be all too aware that his arch rivals will set out to do him few favours.

Liverpool V Chelsea is sure to be an intriguing game for more than one reason…..
