What players are we looking to bring in then Joe?

|

Joe Cole – “I jumped on board because with the players we have here and the players we are looking to bring in; it’s definitely going in the right direction.”

Roy Hodgson – “Last season was a very disappointing season for the club in every respect, culminating in a popular manager leaving. You don’t change doom and gloom or disenchantment with a signing or two. I would never want to dupe the Liverpool public by telling them all is rosy now because Joe Cole has signed. There’s a lot more work to do, a lot more players are needed and we as a football team have got to make certain that when we take to the field the supporters will see there is something different and that we are making the biggest effort we can make.”

These are two interesting quotes from prominent figures at the club; the new manager and his new signing. I’m sorry if I am reading too much into this but it seems to me that when Roy Hodgson talked to Joe Cole about coming to Liverpool, he sold the club to Joe by stating some of the players he would like to bring to the club. Roy kind of backed up this statement by stating that the signing of Joe Cole should not be the sole indicator that the club has been turned around. It is plainly apparent from his comments too that “a lot more players” will be needed before the start of the new season.

As well as the impending sale of Emiliano Insua, the Reds are looking to sell Philipp Degen, and the transfers of both Albert Riera and David Ngog seem more likely by the day. It looks like it will be in an effort to raise some much needed cash to instil “something different” as Hodgson says into the team. The starting point will no doubt be the left back position, but I cannot see a new £5-8m fullback being the great selling point that Hodgson used in his short discussions with Cole.

Maybe the optimism of Cole’s signing has got the better of me, but the implication from both player and manager is that more quality arrivals will be signed at Anfield. The increasingly likely sale of David Ngog means we will be left totally bare for strikers, and there must be a plan in the pipeline to sign at least one player in this position. It certainly feels a darn sight more optimistic than even a week ago when players were being touted to be sold without any real quality players being linked with the club as their replacements.

The positive news from Steven Gerrard has certainly also boosted hope for the new season, and again going by Stevie’s comments, it indicates to me that Roy has still got something up his sleeve in terms of new signings. Gerrard said he was very impressed by Hodgson’s plans, and although Cole’s signing does show ambition, I doubt that his acquisition alone would have persuaded him to stay if he felt it was time to move on. It looks as if Roy has really sold his ambitions and dreams to the two players. He certainly has had a promising start identifying much of deadwood which was at the club. We will now have to wait and see whether he brings the quality of players in many are now expecting. If Cole and Gerrard have been convinced, then surely our optimism is justified. Although I am certainly picking out sections of quotes to fuel my optimism, the actions of both Joe Cole signing and Steven Gerrard staying, indicate that this conjecture does have some sort of substance. Whether in reality, any more exciting signings do actually happen, we will have to wait and see.

the only concern i have is our engine room at the moment – the defence picks itself, and if for arguments sake the front 4 (maxi/kuyt gerrard and/or aquilani cole/babel behind torres/?) are pretty much in place, then who would be the player to partner aquilani in the centre? i really like lucas, but he is not a defensive shield who is happy letting his more creative partner dictate play, he is a box to box midfielder if anything, and if masch goes, then who? martin kelly should definitely be promoted to the first team squad, he can play across the back four, could be a very able deputy for johnson/lb , and if purslow hadn’t jumped on the media’s uninformed p***s and decided insua had to go, we could have had decent young cover that would be very useful, but thats all ifs and buts. i hope we get huntelaar tho, it would solve a lot of these problems (gerrard could drop back) and also create one of the most feared strike partnerships in the premiership..

but if you’re right, i’ll gladly eat my hat as i think taiwo and turan are 2 MUSTS for me and i wouldn’t mind huntelaar either!

@ samuel charles, stop talkin shit. The amount of times in the last 4 weeks alone i have heard “i have it good info that” blah blah has signed for us. I heard that of Remy, Turan, Huntelaar, and a few others and its really starting to itch my gonads. Stop acting like you have anything to add other than specualtion, unless you have a reliable “source” that you are willing to divulge than shut it. Its dickheds like you that start the rumour mill going and endless articles with witless writers adding to ridiculous transfers that arent true on Liverpool websites. Please oh please let me know where you heard this from, at the pub with your mates? newspapers maybe, or the internet? no wait, you have someone in the boardroom right. Idiot….
