A wise move or should Roy have shown more faith?

|

After Thursday’s frustrating, yet welcome win against Trabzonspor of Turkey in which Liverpool won 1-0 but should have had two or three, Roy Hodgson was asked about the failure of Alberto Aquilani to even make the subs bench for the second game running:

“At the moment we are considering loaning him to an Italian club. I didn’t want to use him tonight in case the loan goes through because for Aquilani it’s very important this year that he plays regular football, every week as the number one man on the team sheet. I can’t promise him that here so if a loan move to Italy could help him in that respect it might be good for all parties. It would certainly be what he needs, it would certainly protect the value of the player and when he does return to Liverpool no doubt we will see the Aquilani that we signed before he came here injured last year.”

Clubs interested in the ‘little Prince’ include Napoli and Juventus, and although Aquilani’s agent has denied it to date, it now looks likely that the diminutive midfielder may be on his way out of Anfield.

Signed by Rafa Benitez last season to replace Xabi Alonso, the Italian struggled with injuries and it comes as no surprise that the new manager is planning to get shut of him. Do you think its time for Liverpool to cut their losses on this player?

Diminutive? Maybe diminutive in stature as he hasn’t done much, but physically he’s pretty big… over 6 foot.

  • dan says:

no!!!! we should have definatly showen a little more faith he would av been good this year

  • Zahid says:

He should have shown more faith, if players like Lucas and Ngog have been given a 2nd chance Aquilani should have he wasn’t even given a chance at Liverpool. However at the end of the day Roys the manager and he didnt fit in his plans and would have been sat on the bench, so 1st team football at Juventus will do him good, bit cheeky of Roy to play him against Rabotnicki in the 2nd leg of Europa so he doesn’t play for Juventus in Europe so if we meet along the way he wnt be playing. Id still would have given him a chance he aint rubbish good luck Aquilani……YNWA

One af Rafa’s biggest transfer mistakes, should never have been signed when he knew he had a long term injury and has been a shadow of the player that played for Roma.
Talented player but not cut out for 30+ PL games a year
Hopefully he’ll have a good season and Juve buy him next summer.

He should have been kept and given more time and if by the time the next window comes along he’d not improved then send him out on loan or sell.

  • pf says:

Agree fully with Bill… think he could have played the role Joe Cole has taken up for the next 3 games and see where he’s at… wish him all the best…

roy has spoken too soon…not many people in europe wud say dt aqua does’nt have class…we needed a player lyk him….we dont need sweat always..sumtymz class is also needed..

  • daboy says:

Aquilani only played fleetingly last season and did show class, my only worry is the physical nature of the game suits him in England.
Just the same Roy has made a huge error the side cannot consistently get points without creativity its just not there nor is the depth.
I cannot see them bringing anyone else in to do the job and it points to Roy playing defensive crap all season.

Daboy was absolute, another season of defensive football. Crap

first mistake by roy….dare i say he is potentially a better player than the over rated joe cole?

  • dj says:

I fear Joe Cole will not be capable of doing the job in the hole behind Torres. Aquilani was more suited to that role, and is a more accomplished footballer with more fluidity in his movement and thought. I’m not sure Joe is intelligent enough to play in that role, but I think he would be sensational wide as one of the three behind Torres.

Playing Joe, Aquilani and maxi with Gerrard and Mascherano behind them with Torres up front would be mobile, fluid and defensively sound.

I’m concerned Roy is pandering to what players want, and he seems to have promised Joe this position which I feel he may later regret. For me, when we need strength in depth letting Aquilani go on loan is a poor decision. He could have played an important role this season for us although if Aquilani is not able to cope mentally, then I have to concede that this might be the right decision, but will we ever know the truth.

Still no money available for a full time LB or a striker to ease pressure on Torres. I also think there might be more sales (Mascherano and Kuyt). Still waiting for the big summer promised by that scumbag Hicks.
