I think he’s the perfect understudy to Stevie in central midfield. I know the player has said he prefers playing “in the hole” but I think he’s wrong. Like Stevie his strength is the way he dictates the play with his passing. I also think he’d be great to bring off the bench for whoever is playing defensive midfield.

@phil, jonjo shelvey is an understudy for SG, you don’t pay the guts of £20m for an understudy! for that kind of dough you would expect the finished article, not an impact player coming off the bench.
i personally don’t think we need the lad so we should cash in on him to buy a decent winger or striker

our midfield is now seemingly full of attacking/flairy players. After last night’s game I am more convinced of it.

The future is bright at last

I thinks cole should play in the left side midfield and give gerrard behind torres as his best position. Aqualani can take the role as an attacking midfielder.

Aqualani is a big player, however his injury before had made himself low confident when getting to touch the ball. I think he can shine after this….

Cole should play left or right mid, but probably left b/c I know how he likes to cut in and make plays from the middle and with Maxi out and out on the other wing Torres could be looking at a LOT of good chances this season. Honestly the center midfield should be Aqua and Gerrard they can switch off attacking/holding as both are quite capable of producing from either position. I’d like to see Aqua in behind the strikers/Torres b/c I think Gerrard would benefit more from the center role, where he can load the fuel and conduct the attack from deep a la Xabi Alonso but still have the sense and energy to defend when necessary (leaving the need for a defensive complement like Masch obsolete). If he gets a bit worn we can always put him behind Torres and throw in a Masch replacement or stopgap to hold. I think it would benefit Aqua as well, give him more attacking opportunities, build his confidence. When he played for Roma in his hayday he was an attacking mid. he is stronger in that position than as a pure midfielder. I believe that tandem would be fantastic, a real force to be reckoned with.

He is a qualitiy player, probably the best player Liverpool have had on their bench regulary!
But seriusly, he has a lot to offer and it would be shame for him to leave and be considered a mistake.
Benitez actually did know how to pick players, he just didn’t know the best way to use them.

Same goes for Mascherano, it will be a shame to see him leave having won nothing with Liverpool.

This is my opinion our best Starting XI out of our current squad:

    Reina
    Johnson—-Skrtel———-Agger—–Aurelio/Insua
    Kuyt/Jovanovic–Gerrard—-Aqualani–Jovanovic/Babel
    ——————J. Cole———————–
    ——————Torres———————-

Alberto Aquilani’s game simply evolves around fanciful flicks, which when executed to perfection, are a thing of beauty. However, these are few and far between. And even when properly executed do not necessary improve the play at hand. Without injuries to fall back on as an excuse, Alberto Aquilani will be the flop of Merseyside this season. Lucas Leiva will be a very close second!

the aquilani problem is simple he needs to be thinking of going forward less, as in the tip and run game he loves, the secret is going forward when its right to go forward and finding a liverpool player when its not.

  • lewis Says:

    simple

Mascherano (if he stays)/Lucas/Poulsen as DM
    Aquilani CM
    Jovanovic/Maxi/Kuyt Gerrard Joe Cole/Jovanovic
    Torres

Don’t forget we’ll be playing 70 games or so this season so there will be opportunities for everyone, so Joe Cole will get games at AM, Gerrard at CM etc.

But we’d be stupid to break up the Gerrard/Torres partnership which almost won us the league. Joe Cole has played left wing most of his career, why change that? Not to mention Stevie G is a goalscorer, Cole isn’t. Gerrard bags 20+ goals a season behind Torres bar last season, we need him there. Aquilani has played CM his entire career at Roma, I’ve seen him destroys teams like Juventus and Lazio single handedly when he was in his early 20′s. We need to play him there, he is potentially better than Alonso, as he has more attributes to his game. Pace, dribbling, heading etc.

  • lewis Says:

oh and Aquilani has NEVER said he prefers to play in the hole, you guys are talking crap. He’s played CM all his life, Rafa just messed him around. And I hate the ‘he’s not physical enough for the EPL’ bullshit. He’s 6 foot 1, how big is Fabregas? Scholes? Aquilani is also more clever and has more pace than both of them, strength isn’t an issue for this big lad. Seria A is quite a physical league too.

I think gerrard sitting back the other night against robotnic was brilliant, he was setting the play and dictating the game. Joe Cole was great just behind the striker but they were constantly rotating too as if they had a chemistry like they been playing for years at club level. Aqua man came on later and i thought his passing was immense. play all three of em!! Torres can score goals off of all 3 of em!

  • lewis Says:

Don’t judge players on a game against Robotnicki, judge them after Arsenal. Yes, Gerrard is obviously good at CM but he’s far more effective in the hole behind Torres.

  • Terry Wogan Says:

He’ll play in CM because he’s the best one at Liverpool. People doubted him last year because Rafa wouldn’t play him even when he was fit. I believe that Rafa was afraid to play him because he spent 20 mill on him and didn’t want to look like he made a mistake. It was protecting Aquilani to save himself.

I’ve been watching Aquilani for years at Roma. He is a Fabregas type player that can open any team up. He’s like a new signing for Liverpool this year.
