“Patience,” Reds fans, is the key to negotiate these stormy waters

|

After the eyebrows, initially raised at Roy Hodgson’s appointment, returned to their stationary position, a quiet optimism began to develop among the Liverpool faithful. In only one month at the club, Anfield’s new boss had gone some way to repairing the damage of the car crash that was last season. He had persuaded Joe Cole to forsake Champions League football with either Spurs or Arsenal and join the Reds. His plans for the club were attractive enough to Liverpool’s main men, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres and with Messrs Broughton and Purslow making head-way in their investment search, things were looking up.

After a confortable win against Rabotniki, the Reds took to the field against Arsenal infront of a Anfield crowd full of renewed optimism. And but for a uncharacteristic mistake by Pepe  Reina, Liverpool’s ten men could have  pulled off a victory to boost morale further. There were nonetheless big positives to take from the match not least the return of Torres who’s reception on coming off the bench was akin to a goal being scored.

Journalists and bloggers worldwide were quick to laud the performance and the manager but, such is the fickle nature of football , these same people have rediscovered their critical voice since Monday’s defeat. “Too reliant on Gerrard and Torres, no width, no depth to the squad, money problems, a club in crisis” are words that Liverpool fans are tired of hearing and particularly so early in the season.

Yes, the problems stil remain. Yes billionaire Sheik Mansour has the funds and desire to turn Manchester City into world beaters. Yes, Liverpool’s deeply unpopular owners have given the club nothing yet still want a substantial profit for their “investment”. Yes there are still players starting that are possibly weaker  than those sitting on the bench but lets not get carried away. Think of the feeling before or even directly after the Arsenal game. After appointing, Roy Hodgson, Christian Purslow described him as someone who would “steady the ship”. Whilst a club of Liverpool’s stature aspires for something more than just stability, lets first be patient in negotiating our way through stormy waters. With Hodgson at the helm and with attacking players  of the calibre of Gerrard, Torres and Cole plus, whisper it quietly, investment from a new “mystery” buyer, the ripple of optimism that flowed into Anfield on August 15 might turn into a wave.

Well the transfer window has bought some joy but there is plenty of work in this window before optimism, will grow amongst most fans.
I would like to add that 1 defeat doesn’t mean a lot we all know a season is a marathon not a sprint.

Transfer activity in the next week could detemine our season.

The next 2 months will detemine our future.

This could possibly be the most defining period in Liverpool history since Shankly was appointed.

The team was poor on Monday and it’s going to take some time to put it right.

We are likely to be missing Hyppia, Alonso, Benyoun, Mascherano and Kuyt from the team that came second in 2009. Gerrard isn’t getting among the goals and Torres hasn’t got his sharpness back.

There has been significant change to the squad and I can’t confidently say it has been improved.

Expect a diffcult season this year. 4th unfortunately will have to be the height of our ambitions and that’s a shocking admission.

Even if we have money to spend from whatever kitty exists plus Mascherano and possibly Kuyt sales who would we buy?

    Konchesky? How good is he?
Is he the quality we aspire to see in the club?
Carlton Cole? His goal ratio isn’t good enough. How many injuries has he had? Mahamadou Diarra aged 29 who hasn’t been able to re-establish himself in the Madrid team after injury? Ben Arfa talented with a reported attitude problem. Martin Caceres, right age but can”t establish himself in Barca team and has been on loan with teams who don’t then seem to have tried to make him a permanent transfer. David Trezeguet? He’s too old now and his best years are behind him.

If this is the best we can do in the market we should trust the youth players at the club. If they can’t cut it let them go. Then start afresh when perhaps the club has secured finacial backing

    No player exchanges please.

Too little too late for this season BUT hopefully next year we can improve but new owners must sack most of the l f c board – still worries Yanks will refinance and strtch this beyong October -as crazy as that seems dont forget the Yanks are just daft enough to help Hicks

The only way out of this complete mess is new owners . Their first job should be to get rid of Hodgson and get in a proper manager with proven pedigree and prestige. Hodgson has the mind set of a mid-table manager too used to managing one of the also rans and will never understand what it takes, or have the nouse to manage a club of Liiverpool’s stature.
