TOP TEN Greatest Liverpool Strikers

|

1. Ian Rush – A consummate predator in front of goal, Rush scored 346 goals in his Anfield career and is Liverpool’s all-time record goalscorer. He broke Roger Hunt’s record by scoring his 287th goal against Manchester United in 1992 and it will be a long time before anyone catches him. He had quick feet and a good footballing brain, and with Dalglish providing the assists, it was a lethal combination. Rush had two separate spells with the club, divided by a solitary season at Juventus (1987-88). During his Liverpool career he won 5 league titles and in one season scored an astonishing 47 goals.——

2. Roger Hunt – Hunt still holds the record for most league goals at Liverpool as well as the single season goal scoring record. His partnership with Ian St. John was crucial to Liverpool’s success under Shankly during the sixties as they both fed off the work of Callaghan and Thompson. Hunt was Liverpool’s top goalscorer 8 years in a row from 1962-1969 and he won two league titles and an FA Cup during his decade at the club. Hunt had all the attributes of a modern day forward, he was quick, strong, skilful, had a fantastic shot and a work rate to match any player. —–

3. Robbie Fowler – Scoring 183 goals during his two spells at Anfield, Fowler is a fan favourite of the Merseyside Club and has been nicknamed “God” by fans for his goalscoring exploits. Growing up watching Fowler, I always admired his incredible ability to finish and his outstanding natural instinct as a goalscorer helped him become the Premier League’s fourth all time top goalscorer with 128 goals. Will probably always be my favourite Liverpool player for both his ability and his character.—–

4. Kenny Dalglish – Not many would argue that Dalglish wasn’t Liverpool’s greatest ever player as he contributed a lot more than just goals, but he wouldn’t be best described as a striker. Both a legend at Liverpool and Celtic, he replaced Kevin Keegan as Liverpool’s talisman for a record fee after Liverpool’s first European cup success in 1977. “King Kenny” as he would become known, scored the winner in the European cup final in his first season, and was voted player of the year by the Football Writers’ association in 1978/79. He would win 13 major trophies, including 3 European Cups and three league titles as a manager. A true great of the game.—–

5. Fernando Torres – A tremendously gifted player, the Spanish striker has more than matched the £20million the Reds paid for him back in 2007. With a record of 73 goals in 125 games, he is well on the way to being one of the best players ever to play for Liverpool, if he stays injury free and keeps faith with the team, players and the new ownership of the club. He has every attribute you would want in a striker; pace, strength, heading ability, and of course finishing skills up there with the best of them. —–
