Why FOR ONCE this derby is critical to our season

|

It’s been a long, long time in coming.  In the heat of Istanbul; the modern Iberian setting of Barcelona or the intensity of a night in Milan we probably never thought we’d see the day when we were reduced to this.  This season, however, the Merseyside derby may well be a more important game for Liverpool.

During all of the great European nights Liverpool has experienced since the turn of the new Millennium, we have been a long way from the bottom 3.  Even in dark times, when Gerard Houllier’s reign was hamstrung by his health problems, or when Rafa Benitez was being stabbed in the back by a group of supposed Liverpool ‘greats’, the club has not been in a position where the derby was the most important game of the season.  Certainly, it is always one that all Liverpool fans look out for when the fixture lists are released but it ordinarily falls behind Man Utd, Chelsea and other title challengers in importance.  For the last decade, we have had the upper-hand in the local derby, often winning, often comfortably and always with an eye on the bigger picture.  But the loss of this early-season derby could have two very big repercussions.  With Everton level on points, and ahead on goal-difference; with Liverpool sitting in 18th after 7 league games and with only one win so far, we literally are looking at one of those infamous ‘relegation 6-pointers’.  You could even go as far as to call it a 7-pointer, as if the Blues are to take the honours, they are likely to accrue a positive goal difference and worsen Liverpool’s, making the situation even worse than it is at the present.  Add in to the equation the possibility of a few teams around us racking up 3 points and we could well slip in further.  With the ongoing troubles with the club, and the owners currently refusing to play ball over the new offers made on Tuesday evening, the off-field problems will again overshadow anything that happens on the pitch and will likely take part of the players’ minds off the game.  Particularly with almost two weeks to go until the next round of league games takes place.

Hopefully, we will beat Everton. Maybe the news of possible new owners shortly will lift the players (and the fans).
