Damien Comolli: A View from a Spurs Fan

|

Former Tottenham director of football Damien Comolli has agreed a move to Anfield. A lot of us think we were right to let him go but several disagree. The Frenchman’s three-year spell at the club was very “controversial” to say the least. He came to Spurs boasting a first-class CV coming through the ranks as a coach and then scout for AS Monaco, Saint Etienne and seven seasons at our bitter rivals Arsenal.

He discovered players like Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue and Gael Clichy and I personally, was happy when he moved to us. It was obvious he could unearth quality players and he did this with the likes of Younes Kaboul, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Benoit Assou Ekotto, and Pavlyuchenko. Not only could he find them, he would also help the deal through and bring in these players.

These are just 5 of his captures who ALL played a significant part in defeating European Champions Inter Milan on Tuesday night. Also Heurelho Gomes and Dimitar Berbatov were among his signings. On the other hand Comolli caused a lot of uproar behind the scenes and developed bad relationships with managers Martin Jol and Juande Ramos. Fans were protesting for him to get the sack and got their wishes when he was let go in 2008. Players he brought in who were not good enough or without their consent. The likes of Hossam Ghaly, Danny Murphy, Darren Bent, Dorian Dervite, Tomas Pekhart, Chris Gunter and Gilberto.

You look at these players, and you will see the quality the man brought into the club. You see the players you who didn’t make the cut, apart from Darren Bent, these players weren’t overly expensive. Bent was and still is a good player, just look at his premier league goal-scoring record. The type of player Spurs need at present. I believe Damien Comolli caused a lot of problems at the Lane but also many positives came out of his time at the club and Liverpool will benefit with him at the club. Already he is looking to bring in Blaise Matuidi, 23, a good player with a bright future. He is a holding midfielder who has made his full international debut for France and he has been dubbed by the St. Etienne fans as the new Claude Makelele. Also Roy Hodgson has experience of working with sporting directors as he had this while managing in Europe.

With a new manager, a new owner and now a new director of football at the helm, Liverpool will be looking to spend this January. The risk is worth taking with Comolli and maybe this could reignite there push for a champions league place.

I dont care if Krusty the clown takes the job as long as they get the right players.
They can also get a manager who will play them where they should be played.

Nice article. I think Comolli is a good appointment. He has a decent track record of recruiting from far and wide. He’d never be successful with a Benitez character who would see Comolli as a direct threat but Hodgson probably has the right temperament to work well with Comolli – at least for the time being. In time we will see whether Comolli has faith in Hodgson as manager. If he has doubts there will be issues.
