Reina: “It’s about time that the fans get behind Roy”

|

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina believes Liverpool fans should get behind Reds boss Roy Hodgson as they once did for previous manager Rafa Benitez. He told ESPN Soccernet:

“Rafa [Benítez] was really beloved in Liverpool but I think it’s about time that the fans get behind Roy and support Roy 100%. I don’t think it is heavy criticism out there anyway.”

Reina also said that Liverpool’s squad needs to improve if they want to compete for the title again:

“We are not probably as strong as Man City, Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea and Tottenham can be so that’s why we have to make sure we build a better squad. At the moment, it’s almost impossible to compete for nine months against Chelsea, for example, and that is what I want. The clubs all around England are building proper squads. We have to do the same and we have to be able to compete.”

Agree with Reina, NESV better provide the gaffer with funds to spend in the transfer market and we need two to three quality attacking players in January. This includes a striker and an out-and-out winger who can run down the flanks and cross the ball. To compete at the top with the likes of Manutd and Chelsea we need a bigger and stronger squad. We don’t have many options in midfield and attack and we’ve been playing with those 13-14 players for quite a while now. We need better squad depth and I hope that NESV will actually let the manager spend money on two to three world class players as well as investing in youth talent. Buying young players with potential is a big part but we need players who can come straight in and do the job at this stage.

Roy has already lost what little support he had amongst the fans and every time he opens his mouth, he diminishes it further. The majority of fans want him gone and I refuse to believe some of the players don’t share this desire. Having the club wheel out the fan favorites in a desperate attempt to curry favor for Roy Hodgson is simply embarrassing.

  • John says:

Sorry Roy, but if you want the support of the fans you had better start thinking before opening your mouth. Talking up the opposition while criticising your own players. Your woeful brand of longball football and silly post match analysis do something about these and you may have the support of the fans again.

There is no point in fans thinking NESV are going to shell out transfer fees in January as they want to qualify for the Champions League before they spend money. Maybe, Reina and his teammates should start earning their big wages instead of looking for more money to be wasted on more crap signings. Forget the cup competitions, Reina and his friends should be focusing on the remaining 23 league games and strive to win them all as the Premier League is so poor quality these days that 88 points would be enough to win it. Reina and his pals would also need to realise that the big money signings in these recession times are a non-runner. Liverpool should tell Juventus that they want the 13.5 million for Aqualiani in January as he was never going to make it in England.

to all the roy hataing fanatics out there :
you are fickle, self obssesed, glory hunters, how dare you sully the great traditions of liverpool fc, you are a discgrace to the many generations of proud loyal supporters since the club formend.

let me be clear im not best chuffed with some of roys actions, howver it needs perspective.

my blood boils when i see this sporadic sheep mentality, cull roy and all will be well! yeh sure lets just think now-
1, no one else wanted the job months bak no one wants it now.
2, dalgliesh isnt ready for it.
    3. changing a manager now at such a prematiure stage is without logic.
no white knight is comming to save us.
    and more importantly –
name me one such change that worked for a top flight team(dont quote ramos as that was a diff entity) no cull will be for the good of the club especially at this stage after the summer clear out.
In recent years we have been battleing our way through a war zone and the way to get on in difficult times is as a colleactive , pulling together gets the team through the s**t.
cowboy the f**k up and support all reds to a man!

It’s about time that Hodgson was gone and Liverpool had a manager that we could believe in again.

Btw, our squad is obviously not as deep as Man City’s or Spurs’, but we are on the same level as Man U, Arsenal & Chelsea. Our squad is just being mismanaged again, that’s all

  • awbMaven says:

Anyone who does not support the manager is not a proper fan, simples.

There’s loads of them about and they’re easy to spot, heck, even the writer of this article is one based on his previous moanings.

  • dee says:

Managers earn respect n support from fans, they need not demand it. Roy do something.
