Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson is surprised that Liverpool fans have turned on Roy Hodgson after just five months but he believes there is no hiding the fact that performances by the Reds have just not been good enough. Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror he said:
“This is first time that I can remember a Liverpool manager having the fans turn on him after such a short time in the job. Roy Hodgson has been that what, five months? And yet the fans are not happy because they have seen the way he sets out his teams home and away and they are not impressed. I think he is a lucky man though, because the new owners appear not to be of the knee-jerk variety. They seem more inclined to take the softly, softly approach. It strikes me that they are wondering what the benefits of sacking Roy would actually be. Who else is out there, for example and who that person could bring in during the January transfer window that would improve things. Because despite what people may think, you have to be very, very lucky to get someone in mid-season who will actually improve you.”
Lawrenson believes however that Reds fans know their football and displays have been very poor:
“That said, you can’t hoodwink Liverpool supporters. Roy has had a go and expressed his frustration at the fans but they in turn want to see a Liverpool side that they can be proud of. They have had a look at his teams and it has not been good enough. At the moment it is so negative and sadly, they are not even in with a chance of the top four. Right now it’s touch and go for the top half at best.”

The only logical choice until the end of the season is Dalglish and Phil Thompson as his assistant who knows how to coach and organize a team. Sell the primadoonas Torres and Gerrard, they do not give a damn about the club.

Mark Lawro shut you nonsence, its because of ex players n so called pundits like you and Redknapp Roy is still in the job. You all got on the bandwagon going on about how great Roy will be for us, better than Rafa well now your seeing how good he is.
Utd, Chelsea, nor Arsenal would have got Roy if they replaced their managers, he wouldn’t even be in the list of candidates, so i don’t see why a great club like ours had to pick him, we aint a mid-table team like hes making us, thats where hes suited most not at our club. Being nice doesn’t mean your a great coach, it doesn’t get you know where juast ask Chris Hughton. All the best managers have an arrogance about them and are winners……YNWA

I am very sad about the current situation with liverpool. I am also sad about some of the things said about our players…. Gerrard an “overpaid primma donna” Torres “The most overated striker”.
What a load of b*****ks!!
We liverpool fans are close to being called a laughing stock…. Look at what gerrard has done for us over the years and you should be ashamed to suggest he does not care. Torres is a finisher and if you dont give your finisher chances then guess what… he does not score!!
I am not a fan of hodgson or anyone else who wants to play defensive football at anfield but one thing I will do is support the team whether I agree with the manager or not…. shame we are spoiling the good will that entered the club when NESV took over… It seems we want to have a “protest march” or “sign a petition” every week now!! Support the team thats all we can do… If he gets sacked… he gets sacked… the club will continue as always… an ashamed liverpool fan

I agree with some points Torres and Gerrard deserve respect and Torres is still a world class striker in my eyes and i love seeing him play for us and i wouldn’t swap him for no1.
But telling us to support the team like where not doing so already, because each and every supporter craves for us to win every match we pay for our match day tickets with our hard earned cash, and want our team to win not lose. But when you have a manager like ours who thinks small, hasn’t got a clue what hes doing, people say its not the liverpool way to criticise and sack our managers, neither is it to criticise players and the fans in public.
What happend to keeping everything in house under the new regime, Roys in the media more then Jordons tits are at the moment. At the end of the day if he wants respect from us hes got to earn it, thats the way you win respect by earning not demanding it……On another note Have a Happy New Year everyone, lets hope 2011 proves to be a good one for our great historic club……YNWA

What has disappointed me is Roy Hodgson’s inability to get this Liverpool team to play as a team, a unit with passion. No matter what talent you have, if the team doesn’t possess attitude you are going nowhere. This is one of the key qualities of Jose Mourinho.
Looking at this Liverpool squad coldly.
Reina is a good shot stopper, not good enough in the air, this is a key point when playing in the english league.
Good teams have water tight defenses, if you don’t give away goals easily you are harder to beat. Johnson is not a good defender, for 18 million he should be better, maybe he is better tried on right midfield.
Skrtel is not good either, esp in the air, Carragher was good but is past it, Agger wants to play football but is not physical enough for england, konchesky not good enough either.
As regards the midfield, their key failure is their inability to hold onto the ball and produce enough quality chances for the strikers.
We have no wingers to stretch the pitch and cross good quality from threatening positions.Babel, Maxi, Kuyt, Cole, none able to beat a man on the wing and deliver a cross. As regards the middle, Gerrard is much better in an advanced position, Meireles, Poulsen and Lucas are not ball players, has anyone still got Alonso’s number. There is so much talk about holding midfielders, but they must be able to play ball also and attack when required.
Lastly and most saddening for me is Fernando Torres form. He is good when fit and playing with attitude. Remember when he first arrived, hassling defenders into mistakes, where has that Torres gone to. He is not strong enough to operate as a lone striker in this team especially with the rubbish long ball service he gets. He needs two things, a top quality striker to take away some of the pressure and give defenders something else to think about and secondly better quality of chance. He will score if he gets chances and then confidence will come back.
Liverpool need new blood in January. How about this 11 by end January.
Reina, Kelly, Carragher(if fit), Richard Dunne, Agger ,Johnson, Gerrard, Meireles, Ashley Young , Torres,Cole
