Lawro: “You can’t hoodwink Liverpool supporters”

|

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson is surprised that Liverpool fans have turned on Roy Hodgson after just five months but he believes there is no hiding the fact that performances by the Reds have just not been good enough. Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror he said:

“This is first time that I can remember a Liverpool manager having the fans turn on him after such a short time in the job. Roy Hodgson has been that what, five months? And yet the fans are not happy because they have seen the way he sets out his teams home and away and they are not impressed. I think he is a lucky man though, because the new owners appear not to be of the knee-jerk variety. They seem more inclined to take the softly, softly approach. It strikes me that they are wondering what the benefits of sacking Roy would actually be. Who else is out there, for example and who that person could bring in during the January transfer window that would improve things. Because despite what people may think, you have to be very, very lucky to get someone in mid-season who will actually improve you.”

Lawrenson believes however that Reds fans know their football and displays have been very poor:

“That said, you can’t hoodwink Liverpool supporters. Roy has had a go and expressed his frustration at the fans but they in turn want to see a Liverpool side that they can be proud of. They have had a look at his teams and it has not been good enough. At the moment it is so negative and sadly, they are not even in with a chance of the top four. Right now it’s touch and go for the top half at best.”

“Mark Lawrenson is surprised that Liverpool fans have turned on Roy Hodgson after just five months”. May I remind you, Mark Lawrenson, that we’re 12th and 3 points above the relegation zone with 18 games gone. You also pointed out that you have to be very lucky to get someone in in the middle of the season to improve you. I’m sorry but I think getting anyone in would improve us. Be it Rafa, Coyle, Deschamps or Rjikaard. I really don’t think anyone will do worse than Roy.

  • Kent says:

Kick Hodgson and let Dalglish have a go!

Bring in someone who aint afraid of playing attacking fotball. Someone who understand that Torres cant do everything alone.
We need goal`s to get points!
Goal`s will bring back confidence and joy,
    both to players and fans!

-Use Glen Johnson on the right flank.
-Let Kuyt fight around Torres on topp.
    -Meireles and Gerrard center midfield.

Buy one of these guys for our left flank,
YES, they are expensive but we need quality!

Arda Turan, Fabio Coentrao, Ashley Young
    or Juan Mata…

Pacy wingers on both sides with tecnical skills, would do wonders for LFC.

  • Alan says:

Frank Rijkaard is the man to bring back attacking football and a winning mentality.

  • magnumopus says:

Guys, this isn’t rocket science is it? Even an American should be able to see that something is needed to be done now because the results are not acceptable! Oh, that’s right John Henry did already admit this so now is the time to move on and get a new manager who is young but bright and motivated to live up to the team’s expectations instead of telling us all how good he is, let’s have the results on the pitch do the talking for a change for our manager!

  • Marshy says:

Lawrenson has been ignoring the rubbish served up by Hodgson since he arrived, and told the supporters that he was the right man for the job. Lawrenson lost the Liverpool supporters’ respect ages ago. He’ll soon jump on the ‘Hodgson out, I told you so’ bandwagon soon.

  • Roy is a Twat says:

The owners will not do anything until they hear us loud and clear. Protest is necessary devil. That stupid old man will never resign for whatever reason. Even if we are now standing in the last position of the premier league he will still vow to fight on for the best interest of the club. Enough is enough. He failed Inter, Blackburn and countless of other clubs before Fulham. Roy “useless” Hodgson is just a waste of space in football and should be sent to football prison camp and be incarcerated forever so that he will not destroy another football club. Kick him out now. Voice your protest!!

  • Keith says:

More southern media mates of woy refusing to be critical of him in almost any way.

All we need now is more fergie friendliness and the fans will be hurling abuse from the kick off.

RESIGN and take konch & poulson with you.

  • dj says:

He’s part of the media loving hodgson. i would’nt listen to or believe one word this nutter says.

  • Jack says:

So Lawrenson wanted Rafa out because he thought that the tooth fairy was going to deliver us a world class manager while our club was in financial meltdown with 2 warring owners at the helm. Thanks in no small part to him and the likes of J. Redknapp and Souness that we are lumbered with this mess. Your too right you can’t fool Liverpool fans. Just as you and your fellow ex-players never managed to fool the majority of us when you asked for Rafa’s head.

  • mr pest says:

cant believe at the turn of the year were 12 in the leauge hodgson should man up and walk kevin keegan although not the greatest manger around gaind some respect back when he held his hands up and admitted he wasnt good enough for the england job thats what hodgson should do weather he has the courage is a different matter. As for an new manager i think john henry should seriously look at Joachim Loew he fits the criteria ov an NESV manger young talented and his teams play entertaining football yes he might be expensive to persuade but NESV have shown with the redsox that they are willing t pay to bring in the best for their teams it just remains to be seen whether they have to pay to get rid of the clown already in charge as well

    • Eric says:

Joachim Loew has done nothing at club level and does not have the experience to manage a club of Liverpool’s size. It would be a gamble if we get Loew and I think we’re better off appointing an established, world class manager like Rafa or Hiddink.

  • Kenny says:

The only logical choice until the end of the season is Dalglish and Phil Thompson as his assistant who knows how to coach and organize a team. Sell the primadoonas Torres and Gerrard, they do not give a damn about the club.

  • Zahid says:

Mark Lawro shut you nonsence, its because of ex players n so called pundits like you and Redknapp Roy is still in the job. You all got on the bandwagon going on about how great Roy will be for us, better than Rafa well now your seeing how good he is.

Utd, Chelsea, nor Arsenal would have got Roy if they replaced their managers, he wouldn’t even be in the list of candidates, so i don’t see why a great club like ours had to pick him, we aint a mid-table team like hes making us, thats where hes suited most not at our club. Being nice doesn’t mean your a great coach, it doesn’t get you know where juast ask Chris Hughton. All the best managers have an arrogance about them and are winners……YNWA

SACK ROY, BRING BACK THE JOY

  • Jon says:

I am very sad about the current situation with liverpool. I am also sad about some of the things said about our players…. Gerrard an “overpaid primma donna” Torres “The most overated striker”.
    What a load of b*****ks!!
We liverpool fans are close to being called a laughing stock…. Look at what gerrard has done for us over the years and you should be ashamed to suggest he does not care. Torres is a finisher and if you dont give your finisher chances then guess what… he does not score!!
I am not a fan of hodgson or anyone else who wants to play defensive football at anfield but one thing I will do is support the team whether I agree with the manager or not…. shame we are spoiling the good will that entered the club when NESV took over… It seems we want to have a “protest march” or “sign a petition” every week now!! Support the team thats all we can do… If he gets sacked… he gets sacked… the club will continue as always… an ashamed liverpool fan

    • Zahid says:

I agree with some points Torres and Gerrard deserve respect and Torres is still a world class striker in my eyes and i love seeing him play for us and i wouldn’t swap him for no1.

But telling us to support the team like where not doing so already, because each and every supporter craves for us to win every match we pay for our match day tickets with our hard earned cash, and want our team to win not lose. But when you have a manager like ours who thinks small, hasn’t got a clue what hes doing, people say its not the liverpool way to criticise and sack our managers, neither is it to criticise players and the fans in public.

What happend to keeping everything in house under the new regime, Roys in the media more then Jordons tits are at the moment. At the end of the day if he wants respect from us hes got to earn it, thats the way you win respect by earning not demanding it……On another note Have a Happy New Year everyone, lets hope 2011 proves to be a good one for our great historic club……YNWA

SACK ROY, BRING BACK THE JOY

  • neil says:

well said jon, we liverpool fans are very close to being a laughing stock, at least man utd have this to look forward to when red nose retires.

  • Frank says:

I just wish that all our ex players would just shut their gobs

  • Leo says:

What has disappointed me is Roy Hodgson’s inability to get this Liverpool team to play as a team, a unit with passion. No matter what talent you have, if the team doesn’t possess attitude you are going nowhere. This is one of the key qualities of Jose Mourinho.
Looking at this Liverpool squad coldly.
Reina is a good shot stopper, not good enough in the air, this is a key point when playing in the english league.
Good teams have water tight defenses, if you don’t give away goals easily you are harder to beat. Johnson is not a good defender, for 18 million he should be better, maybe he is better tried on right midfield.
Skrtel is not good either, esp in the air, Carragher was good but is past it, Agger wants to play football but is not physical enough for england, konchesky not good enough either.
As regards the midfield, their key failure is their inability to hold onto the ball and produce enough quality chances for the strikers.
We have no wingers to stretch the pitch and cross good quality from threatening positions.Babel, Maxi, Kuyt, Cole, none able to beat a man on the wing and deliver a cross. As regards the middle, Gerrard is much better in an advanced position, Meireles, Poulsen and Lucas are not ball players, has anyone still got Alonso’s number. There is so much talk about holding midfielders, but they must be able to play ball also and attack when required.
Lastly and most saddening for me is Fernando Torres form. He is good when fit and playing with attitude. Remember when he first arrived, hassling defenders into mistakes, where has that Torres gone to. He is not strong enough to operate as a lone striker in this team especially with the rubbish long ball service he gets. He needs two things, a top quality striker to take away some of the pressure and give defenders something else to think about and secondly better quality of chance. He will score if he gets chances and then confidence will come back.
Liverpool need new blood in January. How about this 11 by end January.
Reina, Kelly, Carragher(if fit), Richard Dunne, Agger ,Johnson, Gerrard, Meireles, Ashley Young , Torres,Cole
