The ONE Man who will decide Roy’s fate?

|

Reflecting on Liverpool’s defeat to Wolves in my article yesterday, I doubted the possibility that John W Henry and FSG would make a quick decision over manager Roy Hodgson. After all Henry & Co have only owned a football club for a couple of months and the Liverpool’s principal owner has freely admitted that he knew relatively little about football before their attempt to buy the club back in October. It seems all the more likely then that the owners will rely on the judgement and expertise of the only man in the Anfield hierarchy, other than Kenny Dalglish, who has some football experience; Damien Comolli. The Frenchman’s relationship with Hodgson is crucial as to when Roy actually departs the club.

It is said that Comolli has a good relationship with Roy. Why wouldn’t he? After all it is becoming increasingly apparent that Comolli is taking full control of transfers; a state of affairs other managers maybe less inclined to put up with. Evidence for this growing power grab comes in the form of two instances that have occurred this week. The first is the apparent sacking of Eduardo Macia as Chief Scout. Certainly there is a case to be made that Comolli must bring in his own scouting network but there is suspicion that the Frenchman does not want to have another leading figure at the club who can give contradictory advice to the manager about players. After all, John Henry and Tom Werner have stated that transfer decisions will be made “by consensus” and that the more opinions to make a decision the better. The sacking of Macia seems to contradict this approach as the Spaniard has a wide knowledge of the Spanish league giving the manager Spanish options while Comolli will have greater knowledge of France. It seems to be a narrowing of the hierarchy rather than any real effort to make the process more consensual.

I don’t believe in Technical Directors/Directors of Football Strategy but that’s only if you have a competent manager. If you have a good manager, then he will take care of everything: team selection, training methods, transfers and everything else. A Director will largely undermine the work of the manager and once they disagree on footballing matters, the club will go wrong. The manager will have to rely on the Director to buy new players and he will have little say over transfers. In my opinion, the manager should be in charge of everything.

However, with Hodgson as manager, I’m more than happy with the appointment of Comolli cause that will mean the club will be smarter in the transfer market and also less power for Hodgson. Comolli will make sure we don’t bring in players like Jones, Konchesky and Poulsen. If you have a manager who doesn’t know what he’s doing, like Hodgson, then the club clearly needs a Director to help oversee what he’s doing and help him out.

Comoli knows nothing about Liverpool FC. He has never worked for world class club like Milan, Barce, Juventus or Real Madrid.

Why should Liverpool’s future manager be chosen by this guy? It’s a big mistake. Look at the amount of poor players Comoli bought at Spurs. It’s as hit and miss as most managers buying players. So why is given such power at a club like Liverpool?

The managers position is sacred at Liverpool and while I’m all for bringing more of a structure into the club I don’t think the fans will take kindly to the managers role being diluted in any way.
