Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson is convinced that Raul Meireles will be an excellent signing for Liverpool and believes the Portuguese midfielder can strike up a great partnership with Steven Gerrard in central midfield. He wrote in his column in the Liverpool Echo:
“Raul Meireles excites me and is proving to be a great signing for Liverpool. The midfielder was outstanding at Spurs and in recent weeks has got better and better. Last Sunday was his best performance so far. From his left footed drive which nearly brought a goal to his header off the line, he was sensational and proved what a good player he is. When Steven Gerrard returns I’m convinced those two are going to form a fantastic partnership in the centre.”
Thompson also feels the performance against Tottenham on Sunday was a step in the right direction:
“Losing at Spurs was harsh because I thought the performance was very promising. At 1-1 I always had that feeling there was another goal in it and it could have gone either way. Unfortunately it went against us. Our first half display was quite inspiring. We passed it well and there was good width. We pressed them higher up the pitch and forced the likes of Wilson Palacios into making errors. We could have gone in at half-time two or three goals up but both Maxi Rodriguez and Fernando Torres missed great chances.”

i agree…meireles is the best liverpool signing i’v seen for a while…definitely better than aqualani..

Aqualani did a gr8 job for liverpool after an injury blow. He is much better than Raul, he shld hve given time to adapt. He is in superb form in seria A. Hope we wil see him nxt summer as a new signing . Cole is one of our worst signing ths year , he completely out of form. Raul is a gr8 player while he is playing with Lucas rather than Gerrard.

Your right in every sense, he plays well when he does not have to do the defensive job that can be passed on to Lucas, cannot do that with Gerrard.

I hope we scam as much money off the Old Lady as we can for him. He’s suited for English reserve rootball or Serie A football, NOT EPL first team football (unless we’re playing girly Italians).
The Aqua man never really got a chance under Benitez, I agree with the above about Raul being the bet signing this summer but would still like to see what Aqua can do for us but maybe too late as he’ll be off on a perm move.
Yeah I agree and I think Meireles is a quality all-round central midfielder. Playing with Lucas allows him to initiate an attack and be more creative and carry out the offensive duties. When Gerrard returns, Meireles should still continue with Lucas in the middle and Gerrard just off Torres. Gerrard should play further up and trust Meireles in supplying him the balls. Meireles should definitely play in the middle cause we need his passes and creativity.
Meireles is a clever signing by Roy(surprising really).Not Aqualanis fault he was injured when Rafa brought him then had no faith in his signing when he was fit could of been our Modric.
If u look at the stats u can find Aqualani mre impressive thn Raul.
In 22 games(sub apperence included) he played for Liverpool he socred goals twice and 8 assits. He never got a straight run of games.
While tht of Raul 14 games played all starting X1 apperence, 2 assist. Thts it nothing much to show. I knw Raul is a gr8 player bt he cn never play with Gerrard in the centre, rather he wld b in a solid patnership with Lucas.
And one thing when Aqualani showed his skills and passing range nobody told that he is a exciting player. You should knw tht he is knw as El Prince ‘PRINCE Of Rome’.
Raul Mereiles will become decent player for us but if i were to compare him to Aqua then the latter seems a better all round, tho he`s on loan.
