Thompson: “They do need a right rollicking”

|

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes the match against Bolton tomorrow will be a very difficult game for the Reds. Writing in his column in the Liverpool Echo, he said:

“There’s very little time for us to get things right after Wednesday night. Bolton are having a good season under Owen Coyle and on paper they offer a tougher test than Wolves. In Kevin Davies, Bolton have someone as good as anyone in the game at what he does. But I’ve also been impressed with Johan Elmander. He can feed off Davies – but they can also play some pretty neat stuff on the floor these days, turning things round corners and linking well.”

Thompson feels some player’s need a “right rollicking” before the match:

“Roy Hodgson needs to get his players motivated very quickly. They do need a right rollicking and probably will be getting one. And if they’d already had one after losing at Newcastle, they’ll need an even bigger one. Because Liverpool just have to get back to at least doing the very basics. Like fighting with every sinew for the club, the shirt the fans – and each other.”

To be honest, with Hodgson as manager, I can’t really see us getting a result against Bolton. Bolton have been fantastic this year and Coyle has done a great job in making the team play some attractive, attacking football, unlike Hodgson. Hodgson needs to stop being so stubborn and change his tactics, mentality and team selection if the team is to win. We will get thrashed by Bolton if we change nothing from the Wolves game. The guy’s got to motivate the players and select a better team and pressure the opponents right from the start, he’s got to stop being so negative. The players have to push Bolton hard and play further up the field.

Hodgson should play Meireles and Lucas in the centre where they have formed a formidable partnership and Gerrard just behind Torres. Kuyt and Maxi should be playing on the wings where they are the most effective. Soto should retain his place at the back to deal with Bolton’s physicality and long balls and he should be partnered by Agger who can distribute the ball well at the back. Hodgson should have realised by now that Aurelio is miles better than Konchesky and start him at left back with Glen Johnson on the right. I hope Roy realises the mistakes he has made, especially against Wolves and change the team, mentality, tactics and motivate the players and stop being so negative.

The major problem here is that, Woy is totally blind to the fact that, he is a very BAD manager.

Woy will NEVER be accepted by Liverpool FC and we all know why don’t we. He should have never been given the job ( with his mediocre management record) in the first place. He is a man with no dignity, that is why he will not resign, he is after one last big payout, cause he’s a GREEDY, CLUELESS, COMOTOSED, old man and the people who apponted him should be held responsible!!!!!. And I will continue to post same, until this CLOWN is gone.

what does fernando torres have to do to be dropped? for me, he has been worse than useless all season, no passion, no desire, no bloody effort and no respect for the fans who have adored him, supported him and payed his wages! it’s obvious he doesn’t want to be here any more and so he should sling his hook! but until he gets his wish, he owes us a damn shift!
as for thommo, i for one would like to see him back in the bootroom alongside john aldridge with martin o’neill in charge, these three would at least bring some passion and enthusiasm back!

    • Eric says:

I agree that Fernando Torres should be dropped cause he’s shown no desire to play whatsoever this season but I disagree about putting Martin O’Neill in charge. The guy’s done nothing in his life, his best achievement at Villa was leading them to sixth placed finish. All he did was make Villa play defensive, counter-attacking football, that’s not what Liverpool want.

      • steve mcauley says:

i know mate, but that’s one place higher than us last season and if we stick with this clown, we’ll be dreaming of a top 6 finish and relieved with a 16th place finish!
i just think martin could add the passion and enthusiasm required for this season and with his preference for rolling contracts we would have nothing to lose, he would certainly not do any worse than rubroy!

      • chris says:

you watch, the moment torres gets dragged off is the moment he will start to stamp his feet and demand that he wants to leave,he is just waiting for it..

    • craig says:

agree been disgrace for last year should be sold in jan

  • Tony says:

I’ve said it for some time now that the players are getting away with murder while this debacle continues.
We all know that Roy isn’t the man for LFC, but that’s no excuse for the no backbone performances we’ve seen of late by these overpaid prima donnas.
If you’re proud to wear the shirt you play FOR THE SHIRT, end of.

  • Kenny says:

Torres and Gerrard are a disgrace and should be sold in January, Gerrard as a captain is a farce. These two are only interested in picking up their big wages and it is clear the rest of the squad are sick of them. Sell Torres to City for 50 million and use the money to buy Dzeko and Carroll. Sell Gerrard and use the money to buy Ashley Young. Hodgson is one of Ferguson’s many lapdogs in the Premier League and anyone with a brain knew it was a mistake to put him as manager. NESV are clueless and a campaign needs to be waged by fans with the same ferocity that ousted Hicks and Gillette to have Dalglish and Phil Thompson appointed now for the rest of the season to stabilize the ship before it sinks in the sea of relegation.

Sad to say but maybe another defeat would be the icing on the cake?

  • Bill says:

Sorry Thomo but if Hogson dropped his crap purchases and played the others in their proper positions we might be getting some where. He is clueless and trying different formations is his dead man walking last option.

  • DJG says:

Play players in the right positions and let Carra and G do the team talk. Roy is finished at the club. No matter how many times he tries to retract it he has discredited himself with the fans by both results and now words and there is no way back. He needs to resign and leave with some dignity as by the Manure game he will be gone in any case; player and fan power will see to that I believe. It seems Kenny won’t get the job. In which case it has to be a former Red with a team of legends around him; boot room structure and mentality. Toshack and Thommo with other legends about? Something like anyway. Walk on.

  • Kenny says:

Get rid of Carragher, Reina, Gerrard, Torres, Kuyt and Joe Cole. Moneygrabbing primadonnas who do not give a damn about the club.

    • ROB says:

for you to say that carra and gerrard are moneygrabbing primadonnas is beyond belief they stuck with the club they love through the good and bad and rightly can expect more from the others ,just because they may not perform in every match they play is no excuse for the others not to perform to the standard WE KNOW THEY CAN .the club is not about 2 players we have come to see as the backbone of LFC but 2 players who love the club and have given their all but wouldn’t you get tired of carrying the burden all the time and be expected to make the team win when the players around you think its ok i can be at half my potential and carra will stop a goal against and stevie will score to secure a victory, the mentality of people like yourself has to stop because stevie and carra as good as they are /have been cannot save this club without the help of the other players that they have to play with are as good as they THINK are ,bold statement this may be but LFC was all about
THERE IS NO I IN TEAM
