Why this superstar signing is not as ridiculous as it sounds

|

The first time I laid eyes on the story linking Liverpool with AC Milan’s Ronaldinho I’m sure I shared the same reaction as most reds fans in thinking, ‘great, more tabloid crap’. The story seems to be gaining momentum however, with more news outlets taking notice of it, and our own Brazilian rising star, Lucas Leiva chipping in his opinion of his international team mate in the hope that we sign him.

What’s more is that the more you read about this bizarre transfer rumour the more realistic it seems to become, especially when you consider that Ronaldinho is down the pecking order at AC and is available for free in the summer. The only stumbling block would seem to be his wage demands as he currently roughly earns a whopping £7.5 million a year and would need to take a huge pay cut if he were to sign for Liverpool.

Some may argue that he’s past it now but at 30 years of age I believe he still has enough time to recapture some of his old form and it would be an absolute dream to see a trio of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Ronaldinho leading our front line. For me, the former Barcelona star is one of the players that fits the term ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’ and any opportunity to snap him up for a cut price should be seriously looked at. It may have been a good four or five years ago now but Ronaldinho at his best took technical football skill on the pitch to a whole new level with his unique playing style, and I was genuinely disappointed to see that he wasn’t able to keep it up for too long.

Bet on Liverpool to beat Newcastle 1-0 at 6/1

You may call it wishful thinking but the change of scenery and a chance to play in the new surroundings of the Premier League may just be the kick-start Ronaldinho needs for his career; along with that I can see Liverpool’s squad being lifted by the signing of such a huge footballing icon. Damien Comolli mentioned recently that strange things could happen in this transfer window, and I can see his point; besides, who would have guessed a few years ago that the likes of Robinho and Carlos Tevez would sign for Manchester City or that Joe Cole would leave the Champions to join one of their fiercest rivals for many years.

However much truth there is in this particular story remains to be seen, but going along with the scenario of it being genuine, would you be happy with the signing of the former World Player of the Year, Ronaldinho?

it wud be a huge risk to bring him to lfc…
firstly b’cos of his huge wage demands and paying such huge wages for someone who is definitely past his prime is not economically feasible..
secondly, he has no premier league experience and traditionally brazillians hvn’t had too much success in england..
having said that, it wud be kinda exciting to see him in a liverpool shirt and it wud lift the spirits of everyone around anfield…

Land him on a free in the summer if we can but not so sure about splashing out on a 30 year old player who’s past his prime in January.

  • bl007 says:

Totally ridiculous as the headline says.
We need YOUNG players, not someone who sees LFC as a retirement home.

  • Joe says:

He has stated himself he won’t be coming. He would be a good addition, but no doubt his agent’s fe and his wages would make the whole thing a massive waste of money.

never going to happen. Although I have been calling the team lazy and incompetent a lot this season and last and I was feeling a bit guilty about it because I don’t actually think players like Lucas or Kuyt are actually lazy, just incompetent – if we signed Ronaldinho then at least I could legitimately call the team lazy and incompetent.

Remember the reason he was not able to keep it up was because of what he wanted to get up all night long at the clubs!

  • Ste says:

He would be a GREAT signing, if we could get a good year or two out of him, and think of what all the younger players could learn off him.

If fit, he would be lethal just behind Torres.

  • samuel charles says:

no thanks, his best years are gone.
he wages are way to much.
we could focus on the future with the likes of mata, coentrao young, suarez and many many other young players who can offer us more now and in the long term and give us better value for money, he offers nothing in terms of sell on value and is hardky getting a game in italy with ac so why would we pull out the stops to get this guy.,

no thanks stay where he is thanks

  • Gobsheen says:

He’d be a fantastic signing. He’s quite a strong lad and his skill levels are ridiculous.
Definitely worth a punt. He’s the same age as Gerrard, Cole and Konchesky more or less. Well worth the risk.

  • smarts says:

Nah past his best and may disturb the aura we are creating at present. We got Nando moaning and another moaner may just be too much!

  • stan howard says:

not bothered what ronaldinho does but roy we dont need any more midfielders we seem to be liked with them daily.

  • shibashis says:

He is old : yes. He is past his prime : yes.
But I still think he will be a good signing provided he takes a pay cut in the name of a new challenge. At this stage of his career this could be the motivation for him.
He is a wizard with the ball, he is past his prime but still what he brings to the dressing room and pitch is quite incomparable.

  • trey otiri says:

cud be another gary mc allister i wud love to see ronaldinho in a red shirt hopefully he can pass some of his experience to the youngsters………
