THREE Possible Scenarios Behind the Torres Controversy

|

Confusion would certainly be an apt description for the last 12 hours surrounding Chelsea’s bid for Liverpool striker Fernando Torres. While some are reporting that the Spaniard wants to leave (Guillem Balague, Sid Lowe, Andy Hunter, Jason Burt of the Daily Telegraph), others have yet to confirm the story (Tony Barrett, BBC etc). For me there can only be three scenarios as to where such a story has come from:

Bad Source – For many Reds fan, this will obviously look to be the most attractive scenario. Every Liverpool supporter will hope that the story that Torres wants to leave isn’t true and the fact there has been no confirmation from Torres or Liverpool that he wants to leave the club will surely hold sway for now. It seems the basis of the story is from Spanish sources as Guillem Balague and Sid Lowe of course have links in Spain. People will just hope that these sources are wrong and that Torres is not looking for a way out. In addition, as Tony Barrett suggests, Chelsea is a club with its own problems and an equally big rebuilding job is needed at Stamford Bridge as it is at Anfield.

Torres anger at lack of ambition – Another theory is that Fernando Torres is stating to Liverpool he wants out because of the lack of transfer activity in the January transfer window. There are question marks over the ambition of Fenway Sports Group after the lack of investment in the playing staff. An apparent Anfield source told Goal.com:

“This Chelsea bid would not be coming if they didn’t feel they had a good chance. He thinks the squad is miles away from competing and he’s been shocked by the lack of activity in the transfer market.”

The protracted negotiations for Luis Suarez and Charlie Adam it is suggested have left Torres questioning his future at Anfield. He believes the squad to be nowhere near challenging for the title and the lack of immediate investment in the squad suggests that the situation won’t improve any time soon. There is no chance of Champions League football next season and to follow his ambitions, he is willing to listen to the offer from Chelsea. With the recent news of the Reds agreeing a fee with Ajax for Luis Suarez however, perhaps this belief will change.

Torres has just had enough – At 26 years old, Torres is at the prime of his career and wants to be winning trophies sooner rather than later. According to some reporters, including the Times’ Tony Evans, Torres has had many promises broken by the club, and wants to move to a club who can give him the success he craves in the immediate future. It is suggested that Chelsea would not bid so late in the transfer window unless they had intimations from the player himself that he wants to join the club.
