Cole: I need to play a ‘central role’

|

Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole believes he needs a run of games in his favoured central midfield position to get the best out of him:

“I feel my best position is central midfield, that’s where I started my career. I’d love to play a run of games in there but I will play anywhere. I just need to get back in the side.”

Cole has had a difficult first six months on Merseyside with a lack of form, injuries and suspensions. He will hope his winning goal against Bolton will spark his Anfield career into life.

Joe Cole is not a central midfielder. His best position is playing just behind the main striker. He can also play on the right and left but no way he’ll be playing central midfield for Liverpool. On top of that, we’ve got Lucas, Meireles and Gerrard in that position.

    • Phil says:

I totally disagree. Play HIM as the attacking central midfielder in front of Lucas/Meireles and play Stevie behind Torres. What do you think?

    • Jay Wright says:

He’s not enough of a goal threat to play behind the striker (especially in Hodgson’s team where only two players attack!), and he’s not quick enough to be a quality wide man.

As I’ve been saying all season, Cole (and the rest of the team) would be best served by switching to a 433 formation, with Cole competing with Gerrard, Meireles, Pacheco and Shelvey for the two more attacking roles in that central three, while Babel, Jovanovich & Kuyt compete for the wide forward places alongside Torres or N’gog

  • John says:

I believe that Joe would work well behind Torres. Almost a 4411 if you like. He would be infinately better than Ngog in a 442. Ngog is almost a passenger for me. Will always be too lightweight for the Premiere league. He does not like heavy challenges.
From what we have at the moment:
    Rene
    Johnson, Skirtel, Agger, Aurellio
    Kuyt Lucas Gerrard Maxi
    Joe
    Torres

Konches… should not be used!!! nor Poulsen!!!

Your tactically not intelligent enough Joe otherwise Jose,Ancelloti or Hiddink would of played you there for Chelsea.

Roy claims he didn’t want you, and he said it was Purslow that signed you.

Altogether your screwed i think, and i as a fan dont want players telling me they want to play. Play where your told to, and hopefully its on the left or right of a three behind Torres in a 4-2-3-1.

  • samuel charles says:

As a fan i dont want you talking like your talking mate.

You do not put players in their wrong positions you mug you!

he has told us before on the offical club channel, that he would play anywhere for this club, but he did state that he would like to play in a central role.

i suggest you research first then talk after!!!
joe cole is not and never will be a winger as your stupid graphic is trying to show in your crappy post.

liverpool do not play like your 4-2-3-1 suggests!!!

i do not knwo what planet your on but i hate fans that speak total crap.

      Sammy boyo,

      Some points to help you.

      1. He’s not performed since being at LFC in any position he’s played.

      2. He trying to play the big I am to force a weak manager’s hand.

      3. Roy said he didn’t buy him Purslow did. Fact.

      4. I didn’t say he’s a winger. If you knew anything about football you would know that the three players behind Torres in a 4-2-3-1 in an ideal world would be mobile, intelligent and able to play anywhere across the three.

      5. If you read my post properly you thiko, you will see for his benefit he would be better playing right or left of a three in a 4-2-3-1 because that will suit his game more.

      6. I think every LFC fan can see we are not playing a 4-2-3-1 because we are blowing away opponents at the moment with a modern approach to 4-4-2.

      7. As you will appreciate being so “intelligent” that the player out wide of a three in a 4-2-3-1 are generally not classical wingers, but I’m sure you knew that with your superior football knowledge.

      8. Why would you release a player that was made to play centrally (Aquilani) and then sign an unintelligent (widely known in football circles) player that wants to play there, but never really has.

      9. Surprise, surprise Mourinho, Hiddink and Ancelloti never played him in central role, I wonder why, are they thick as well or do they think Joe is tactically inept and not capable of playing there as I do?

      10. Finally, I personally think he’s as thick as two short planks and I wouldn’t have signed him. That mastermind Hodgson released on loan to Juventus a far more intelligent player in Aquilani who can play centrally.

I think you should probably do a little more research for yourself, because then you wouldn’t look like a complete idiot. I’m bored with you now, I don’t want to embarrass you anymore plus I would much rather debate this with someone who is educated.

  • Fidel says:

I don’t think Joe would do it as a central midfielder. He doesn’t have a great long pass or the vision needed in such a position, nevermind the tectical discipline. He would be more suited playin behind Torres. He might even score more if the Bolton game is anything to go by

  • jo says:

Joe Cole has done nothing of note to make demands for a place in central midfield ahead of better players than him.
It would be a shame if he is using the goal that was already going in and he unnecessarily touched it in from on offside position just to claim it. Maxi’s initial shot was going in anyway.
Saying Ngog is too lightweight and Joe Cole should start ahead of him is merely repeating what Skysports pundits preach with no basis for saying it.
I would not say Joe Cole is any stronger than Ngog and also gets brushed of the ball easily.
Ngog is developing as a player while Cole is winding down with all his injuries.
I think Ngog will be a better player by he time he is 29 like Cole is now.
There is a reason why no manager has played him in his preferred role since he left West Ham.
There is simply better players in that role than him and secondly but more importantly, he is not as good as he and the UK media thinks he is.

  • Julie says:

The only person he should be behind is Roy ( as a bench warmer ) or his next best position is the same one his mates PK & Poulson played on the weekend!!!………. Left Right ( OUT ). I agree with Sammie. C. Liverpool don’t employ any other formation other than ROY’S 4-4-2 as long as he’s there they will continue with that system.

  • Kenny says:

It is amazing that Torres suddenly started to run around again with the transfer window reopened. Eljero Elia is the wrong signing for Liverpool, it should be Nzogbia.

  • Kenny says:

Liverpool should sell Aquailani for as much as possible before he gets injured again. He has found his comfort zone in Italy.

  • Lee says:

its been said already but i’ll just give the shortened version. central clearly isn’t his best position. he’s done nothing from it when played there. and funny how he was never played in his “best position” at Chelsea. he got used as an auxiliary winger.

  • daboy says:

So Joe Cole scored a goal i reckon he still should be playing left right out.
