Eat Your Heart Out Rooney: TOP TEN Overhead Kicks Ever!

|

Someone who was new to watching football this weekend would be thinking that Wayne Rooney’s spectacular goal for Manchester United over their City rivals was the best ever. Especially given the hype it got across the media and even Sir Alex Ferguson said it was the best he had seen at Old Trafford. I am sure the likes of Eric Cantona, Denis Law and the like would have something to say about that, despite it being a perfectly executed bicycle kick was it really one of the best? Supposedly because it was against Manchester City and it proved to be the winning goal would raise the importance but in the build up Rooney has miss hit a pass, then Nani’s cross took a deflection, taking the pace out of the ball and allowing Rooney to execute.

Ok, it was still a superb strike and one that reminds me so much like the goal scored by Pele in the film ‘Escape to Victory’. Also the fact Rooney had not been playing that well during the game perhaps shocked us all into a hyped frenzy about it being the greatest goal ever but it was perfectly fitting for a winning goal in a competitive derby game. It got me thinking about some of the best overhead aka bicycle kicks I have seen and after some reminiscing followed by watching clips on the internet I came up with my top 10 overhead / bicycle kick goals. It was tempting to disregard those goals scored outside of the Champions League and top domestic leagues in Europe but I still think some of them deserved a place.

Honourable mention goes to the Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar who has scored many goals in the overhead category, there is even a compilation of them on youtube. Also, Rory Fallon and Roger Boli were also close to entering my Top TEN but none of them really had that special feel like the following list has…..if you think I have missed an important goal out then please comment. Also, where do you think Wayne Rooney’s goal will rank amongst these?

10 – Double Overhead kick (Gimnasia la Plata v Boca Juniors) – Ok, this entry is not to be taken too seriously however I have never seen a double overhead kick scored in my life time. It’s quite hard to tell which of the two Giminasia players get the final touch but in real time it looks like they both connected.

9 – Alex Tera (Melbourne Heart FC v Perth Glory) – After seeing this goal on Soccer AM recently I was majorly impressed. Despite the goal coming from Down Under in an A-League game, the player Alex Tera uses incredible agility and accuracy to score this goal. It’s one that definitely looks good on the eye.

8 – Stan Collymore (Bradford City v Leeds United) – One of the first that came to my memory when recalling overhead kicks. Especially as this came during a fierce local derby although it may not be one of the most agile of kicks in this top ten, it’s certainly an excellent finish.

7 – Rivaldo (Barcelona v Valencia) – This goal reminds me of playing the older versions of FIFA and Pro Evo, with the simple chip into Rivaldo and an almost flawless bicycle kick that flies into the top corner.

nost of these don’t even come close to Rooney’s goal in terms of execution or power.
1 of them is not even a bicycle kick, merely a volley. Djoerkaef was facing goal, so considered a scissor kick. Ronaldinho’s is similar to Berbatov’s goal vs Liverpool, so nice, but not as jaw-dropping. Only Bressan’s and Sinclair’s can match Rooney, so the article title asking Rooney to eat his heart out, is sensationalist and well.. not even true.

Liverpool wouldn’t mind having a couple of goals like that to help them get CLOSE to a champions league spot 🙂

Although Shreks goal was good & sideways on. The best overhead kick bar none Trevor Sinclair for QPR, also Rivaldo & Barnsey scored better overhead kicks & Dennis Tueart used to score those for fun
