Tremendous Promise But He’s Going To Need Some Help

|

If Liverpool striker Luis Suarez continues with the standard of performance shown both in his cameo performance against Stoke and for the full 90 minutes against Wigan on Saturday, I feel fairly certain that the £22.8million spent on him will be a bargain. Any doubts that the 24 year old will find it difficult to adapt to the rough and tumble of the Premier League, were extinguished by the performance against the Latics which was only missing a goal to make it a perfect first start for his new club. Kenny Dalglish praised the display after the match at the weekend:

“It’s not difficult to warm to him is it? He’s very energetic and skilful. He loves to score goals and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet today. In normal circumstances maybe we would have taken him off because he’s not had a game for a wee while. It probably pushed him that bit too far. We were just hoping he might get us a goal.”

The first thing you notice about Suarez is that he is a very awkward player for defenders to mark. Like his fellow South American Carlos Tevez, he loves to drop deep for the ball and get involved in build up play, but once he draws defenders out from their position, he will dart forward to make forward runs into the box or on the wing, making him very difficult to mark as well as creating space for himself in the process. On more than one occasion he found himself one-on-one with defenders, and used his trickery to win free kicks in dangerous areas around the opposition penalty box.

His skill on the ball is very exciting as he gave a Wigan defender a dummy before cutting inside to unleash a shot which unluckily hit the post and went out to safety. The Uruguayan would later demonstrate his prowess from dead ball situations by curling a free kick that hit the bar at the Anfield Road End with the score 1-1. What you may have noticed so far is that much of what I’ve said was fundamentally down to his own individual play. The 24 year old certainly combined well with his team mates on occasion but, certainly after the second half substitution of Raul Meireles, there was a great deal less creativity from his team mates.

A lot of liverpool fans are overreacting to the good start king kenny has made, but they are still 5 first team players short of a title challenge and would need to splash out at least £60 million to make these players top quality.

They need to sign a Left Back, Centre Back , Left Winger, Right Winger and defensive midfielder ( dont be telling me s***e like Lucas is good enough, he’s good enough for a mid table position or 4th choice defensive midielder, not good enough for a first team place for champions)
