Whatever happened to Anthony Le Tallec?

|

Forward Anthony Le Tallec was signed by Liverpool after a successful under-17s World Championship played in Trinidad and Tobago back in 2001.

Le Tallec was part of a vision Gerard Houllier was putting together – the gaffer signed the youngster and his French cousin Florent Sinama-Pongolle in a deal worth £6m from Le Havre.

The pair remained at Le Havre on loan for the next two seasons as Houllier allowed the forwards to develop their games before finally bringing them to England in 2003. Le Tallec never scored in the league for Liverpool, but did net his only goal in a UEFA Cup tie in October 2003.

A season later, he was a surprise starter in the XI who defeated Juventus in a successful Champions League campaign. However, he was used sparingly as Spaniard Rafael Benitez took over the reins at Anfield.

From that campaign onwards the Frenchman went off the radar. He spent spells at Saint-Etienne, Sunderland, Sochaux and Le Mans before joining the latter permanently in 2009. He only remained a permanent Le Mans player for a season though – he joined Auxerre this summer for €3m.

The much travelled striker is still only 26 and has one league goal this season from his 14 appearances.

The problem with Le Tallec is that he wasn’t very good. It seems his younger brother is a lot better and I always thought that his cousin Florent Sinama-Pongolle was better than Anthony Le Tallec. Not that Sinama has exactly set the world alight since leaving Liverpool…..
