How are such divergent performances possible?

|

If Liverpool were ever part of a European Super League, playing against Europe’s biggest team’s every week, I have no doubt the Reds would win a few league titles for the fundamental reason that the team always seems to turn up all guns blazing against the top sides. Last week I tipped the Reds to win against United just because of the Red Devils’ vulnerability at the back with the absence of Captain Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. I still felt it would be a tight encounter and not a convincing 3-1 win that it eventually turned out to be.

Once again, all the big players turned up and put in displays, something they absolutely failed to do against West Ham last week. Like me, Dirk Kuyt is equally perplexed as to how inconsistent the Reds can be:

“The aim for us is consistency. We have shown that we can compete with the best, but competing with the best is not enough to win things. We have beaten United, we have beaten Chelsea (twice) but we also want to beat the other teams as well. You need to win, with all respect, against the West Hams and the Wolves and the Blackpools. Everyone is working really hard every day to go forward, and hopefully we can show that West Ham (a 3-1 defeat) last week was a mistake and go on a run of winning games.”

Some of this can of course be attributed to the quality of players at our disposal. There wouldn’t be many Reds fans out there who would agree that the team on Sunday that beat United could go on to win the title next season, but paradoxically, a team that has beaten only twice in the league before Sunday’s match, look pretty ordinary against a side which had lost eleven times in the league already this season.

Motivation is obviously a key factor in how displays against Blackpool and Wolves could be so contrasting with wins against Man U as well as two wins against Chelsea. With Kenny at the helm, there shouldn’t be any problems in terms of motivation but after a defeat to relegation threatened West Ham and victory against league contenders Man U inside a week, inconsistency is still clearly a problem that needs addressing.

In light of Liverpool’s FLUKEY win yesterday, it has to be pointed out that all we have done is replicate what United themselves used to do in the 1980’s to Liverpool. More often than not, Liverpool would win the league title and only take one point at best from the two head to heads each season. In terms of the rivalry between the two clubs one usually wins the league title while the other takes the head-to-head honours in any season. So my fellow Liverpool fans unfortunately all yesterday was was a consolation prize. United will unfortunately get no.19 while Liverpool will finish nowhere. So yesterday’s win was akin to Wimbledon beating Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final. I guarantee the level of effort by the players especially Kuyt will go down several notches against Sunderland and we will return to our true form.

Kenny you d*ck head are you blind? FLUKEY???? That was one of the most convincing wins against the scum for years. What game was you watching????

While I agree with some of your comments, that one destroys any credit that may be contributed to the rest.

If you believe we are not improving and that was a one off answer me this, do you honestly believe we could have been so “FLUKEY” six months ago with Roy in charge and do you really think there has been no improvement over that period in our results / position / performances?

Credit where credit is due, FLUKEY???? MY AR*SE!!!

Baz, what happened after our brilliant win over Chelsea against Wigan and West Ham? What happened in the games against Blackpool,Everton,Wigan and West Ham since January where eight goals were conceded and 10 points dropped? If you think that 4th place with this squad is still possible than you are dreaming?

    • stanley says:

no doubt we are inconsistent and 4th place this season is almost impossible..but that doesn’t mean we haven’t improved..
since kenny’s appointment, we have lost just one game and drawn two in the last eight league games, which is much better than under hodgson…
with a few quality additions in the summer, we can surely challenge for top four next season…

  • Kenny says:

Stanley,we have lost 2 games against Blackpool and West Ham. The 10 points dropped would have put us in fourth place but instead we concentrated on the mickeymouse Europa Cup. It is going for the title itself we need to do next season and not settling for finishing 3rd or 4th in this mediocre league.
