Rumour Mill: £20m Escape Clause in Reds Star’s Contract?

|

Mark Ogden in the Daily Telegraph is reporting the Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina does have a £20million escape clause in his contract and that the Reds fear losing the Spanish goalkeeper in the summer. Ogden believes that if Reina is tempted to move away from Anfield, the Reds have already lined up four possible replacements. Schalke’s Manuel Neuer, Lyon’s Hugo Lloris and Ajax and Holland keeper Maarten Stekelenburg are being touted but the most surprising is Blackburn keeper Paul Robinson. The former England international will have two years remaining on his contract in the summer and would be the cheapest option out of the four.

This week it is Former Liverpool WAG Clio Zenden!

It would be great to have a goalie that actually keeps his eye on the ball and moves rather than being a statue like Reina was at Old Trafford and Upton Park. Thanks to Reina this club will once more not have Champions League football next season.

    • steve mcauley says:

oh puleeeze! pepe’s the best goalkeeper we’ve EVER had! have a word with yourself, he’s worth 15 points a season on his own!

  • ynwa says:

KENNY…….Which planet have you descended from?, go back to your moronial colony, F MORON!!!

  • steve mcauley says:

if pepe and the other senior ‘star’ players are made aware of summer spending plans and perhaps even have some input regards potential targets, then i don’t think they’ll be going anywhere but FSG need to show they are serious, yes you can talk about how they forked out for carroll and suarez BUT that was actually roman’s dough, they didn’t actually dip into their own pockets!

  • Kenny says:

In response to steve mccauley and ynwa did you two actually see the goals Reina conceded against West Ham? Reina is only as good as the defence and team in front of him. This is the same worldclass goalie who couldn’t be bothered wearing a goalie’s cap in the secondhalf at home to Arsenal to shield him from the sun. He was crap at Old Trafford, he palmed out the ball to Rodallega in the 1-1 draw at Wigan. He failed to come off his line to stop Gohouri scoring for Wigan at Anfield. This is the same worldclass goalie who mistook a beach ball for a football last year at Sunderland. The guy has admitted himself he has been crap this season. Thanks to Reina the club will once again have no Champions League football next season. So Steve you are right in a way Reina has cost Liverpool at least 15 points this season.

    • steve mcauley says:

what a numpty! yes i watched the game on sunday and the other THREE you mentioned, have you watched the other 100+ he has played? obviously not because you can’t see why he’s considered amongst the best keepers IN THE WORLD and why he’s being linked with a record move for a keeper to the TOP 2 teams in the PL!!! catch a grip man!

  • Kenny says:

Steve McCauley, Reina and his agent contacted Utd and Arsenal not the other way around, that is a fact and a real endightment about Reina’s socalled committment to Liverpool. The criteria you apply to Reina about 100 games could also have been applied to Torres but we all know how lacking in committment to Liverpool he was this season before he went off to Chelsea for his big pay rise to offset the tax increase the British government are bringing in in April.

    • steve mcauley says:

why don’t you look back to your first statement, correct me if i’m wrong but weren’t we debating his QUALITY, not his commitment!
p.s. i’d love to know where you get your “facts” from because i wasn’t aware of pepe or his agent contacting anyone! however i don’t believe there is very much loyalty from anyone in football these days but that’s a debate for another day.

  • Kenny says:

So Steve you believe Reina’s loyalty might be in question but you prefer to have him in goal, strange, very strange. Look at the clear goalscoring chances Torres missed this season for a player of his supposed quality, the same criteria applies to Reina ie the saves he should have made this season but surprisingly has not. Reina was Torres’s nextdoor neighbour up in Liverpool. Reina is sending the same signals to the club that Torres did about the supposed lack of ambition of the club, but he is really trying to hold the club to ransom with these Arsenal and Man Utd stories like Rooney did. How would Man Utd and Arsenal have known their was a 20 million buyout clause in Reina’s contract unless Reina and his agent had told them.

    • steve mcauley says:

again, refer to my initial comeback, i was referring to pepe’s quality, which you were questioning! i never mentioned loyalty, commitment OR fernando torres!
you talk of the saves he SHOULD have made, are keepers immune to ‘off days’? what i’m saying is his stats PROVE he’s our best ever keeper!
do i want him to stay? i want him to WANT to stay, if not, adios!

  • Kenny says:

Steve, a player is only as good as his last game. Liverpool have lost 11 out of 28 games this season, Liverpool lost 11 in 38 last season. Reina’s quality has deteriorated, it would be wise for Liverpool to cash in on him this summer. With Benitez and Torres gone, Reina is obviously not bothered anymore, Liverpool cannot afford to play a goalie whose head is somewhere else.

    • steve mcauley says:

glad you didn’t say that when rushie had a stinker or fowler or, or carra, gerrard, hansen, dalglish, owen, souness, mcdermot, heighway, case, smith or any player who had a bad game! talking about heads being somewhere else, you should take yours from out of your arse!
only yankin’ your chain mate, we’ll have to agree to disagree

    • steve mcauley says:

by the way, which goalkeeper who has never had a bad game ( hopefully not his last one anyway) would you replace pepe with?

  • Kenny says:

Stekenlenberg would be a suitable replacement. Reina admitted himself he has been poor all season not just the West Ham game. You mentioned earlier that senior players should have an imput in summer transfer signings, is that the same sort of imput Carragher and Gerrard had in the signing of Joe Cole (do you remember Carragher’s comments about Cole being a great signing?) Why would Reina have this 20 million buyout clause if he wasn’t thinking of leaving for richer pastures? It makes financial sense for the club to take the 20 million as Reina’s best days are behind him. The problem with Reina being poor all season is that it has allowed Spurs and City to claim the fourth spot once more despite their many average results this season.

  • steve mcauley says:

EVERYBODY said cole was a great signing, doesn’t mean they were involved in the transfer!
if, and it’s a BIG IF, pepe has a get-out clause then it’s probably because dumb and dumber were in charge when he signed his contract, so let’s be honest, could you blame him? and you can’t put all the blame on reina for our slump, the entire team were s***e under woy, you’re being very unfair!

  • Kenny says:

If he was committed to the club, he would not have signed a contract with a getout clause. Reina is the last line of defence and he has not been interested the whole season so the blame attributed to Reina is fair, he has taken his wages under false pretences.
