Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has stated that he believes the Reds will need at least six players to compete for the title again despite the emergence of some young players. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Daily Post:
“Alex Ferguson said in the week that Liverpool will be a force to be reckoned with next season and he is right. But they will need the addition of probably half a dozen players this summer.”
Lawrenson was full of praise for some of the young players though:
“Jay Spearing has done really, really well of late though. I remember Kenny threw him into the derby side to stop Mikel Arteta playing and he did extremely well. His passing and performances have got better and you could argue that him, John Flanagan, Jack Robinson and even Martin Kelly to an extent, would not have been given the same chances under any other manager. Okay, circumstance have dictated that somewhat but the rest of the kids at the Academy now know they have a manager who is prepared to chuck them into first team action. And what makes it even better is that these are local boys who understand the club.”

What the side needs is what the King is now providing, purpose, desire, motivation and more than anything else BELIEF.
Dale, BELIEF does not compensate for a thin squad and too many inexperienced players. The first choice team can hold their own against anyone, but a few injuries and we would have problems. Yes, Flanagan and Robinson did well, but to expect them to be able to do that every week is another matter. The club needs more players to give us the squad depth to go through a full season and compete. This is what Lawro is saying. He is not a fool
