Carroll & Spearing Start, Bet on Liverpool to win 2-1 at 17/2

|

A lot of the build up to the game between Liverpool and West Brom has centred on the Reds’ former manager and now Baggies boss Roy Hodgson (Team sheet below). Roy may not get a warm reception from the visiting fans but his West Brom side have to be given some respect due to their recent performances. Being pegged back after being 2-0 up against Arsenal at home, shows the Baggies defensive vulnerabilities are still there but being able to compete with the Gunners to such an extent, shows they will be no pushovers for the Reds today.

Players such Peter Odemwingie, James Morrison and Chris Brunt will certainly be big threats for the Reds to deal with, and Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel must be at their best to stop the Baggies attacking threat. The absence of Graham Dorrans through injury should be a boost for Liverpool though, and the Reds will certainly expect a well drilled, and organised team when they face West Brom today.

In regards to Liverpool’s team, the anticipated return of Luis Suarez from injury, and another start for Andy Carroll after scoring for England against Ghana in mid week, will mean we should see them being paired up front for the second match in a row. Carroll should be full of confidence after scoring his first goal for England, and will also have benefited in terms of match fitness from the 60 minute run out he got on Tuesday night. Suarez meanwhile, has not played since the Sunderland match two weeks ago because of injury and would have benefited from not featuring for Uruguay. He has commented on his frustration about his stop-start time at the Reds so far after also having to sit out recent Europa League matches, but with a clear run of Premier League fixtures until the end of the season, he can now get into full flow alongside Carroll.

With Steven Gerrard absent today, Raul Meireles will have to be a crucial creative presence in central midfield, and it will be good to see the interaction between himself and Suarez. Glen Johnson again plays out of position at left back but bizarrely he seems to be more secure defensively on that side as he tends to not make as many forward runs on his weaker left foot.

With West Brom still finding their away under Hodgson, it maybe that this match could be quite an open affair. West Brom’s backline of Meite and Olsson is not the most secure and although Hodgson will be determined to keep it tight at the back, the Reds should find enough joy with Suarez and Carroll to get themselves a couple of goals. Prediction: West Brom 1 – 2 Liverpool.
