Why I would have taken FSG over a Sheikh Anyday

|

Manchester City’s owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan has spent hundreds of millions of pounds in attempt to help the club become one of the biggest clubs in the world. The majority of this money has been spent on bringing in the best players and best managers to the club in order to win many major owners. You may think this is exactly what you want from your owners but the truth is that it isn’t, as it could end up doing more harm than good.

It all seems to be somewhat rosy in the Manchester City garden at the minute. They are on the verge of securing automatic qualification to next season’s Champions League for the first time and they are set to face their bitter rivals in a FA Cup semi final at Wembley. This has come about as a direct result of the owners splashing the cash on improving the team, and who is to say they won’t continue their vast spending in the summer? Manchester City fans are loving it but this type of ownership cannot last forever and when this bubble bursts (which it will eventually) Manchester City’s fall from grace could be so severe that they may never recover.

The money the club is spending is unsustainable. The club is massively in debt as the owners continue to spend far more than it is bringing in. UEFA’s plans to implement club rules declaring you can only spend as much as you bring in could see Manchester City banned from European competition as they are currently hugely in breach of this. Questions such as who will want to play for a club banned from Europe will be asked and answered with an emphatic “no-one!” The only way of reducing such a debt will be to sell players and reduce wages which is the main reason players are joining City. Of course this is all speculation but it just highlights the ramifications should Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan continue with his short term planning and should UEFA stand by their plans.
