Lawro: Why the Spurs defeat was no bad thing

|

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes the Spurs defeat will confirm to FSG that the squad needs improving. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Daily Post:

“I don’t agree with those who believe Liverpool’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday was a blessing in disguise. But I would say that it wasn’t such a bad deal for the team’s shortcomings to have been exposed while principal owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner were in attendance. While he wouldn’t have wanted such a graphic demonstration, it was further evidence that Kenny Dalglish is right to ask for more players and more quality in the squad. The defeat will have reined in one or two supporters who were confident Liverpool already have enough to finish in a Champions League position next season. They don’t. They need new players, and Fenway Sports Group are willing to bankroll that squad strengthening. Ideally, Liverpool should sign six new players. And it isn’t just quality the squad needs, but also quantity. I’ve mentioned this before, but with Daniel Agger always injured and Jamie Carragher nearer the end than the beginning of his career, Liverpool need a new centre-back. They also need two wide players and another striker, and that’s just to give themselves a chance of a top-four finish next season.”

Lawro doesn’t believe Europa League football would make much difference to those players attracted to joining the Reds:

“Not being in Europe might hamper Liverpool a little bit when it comes to attracting players in this summer, but I don’t think it will make a massive difference. Liverpool are different to most teams in that they have such a rich history and are world renowned, and with Kenny back in charge he is a famous figure at the helm.”

This week it is former Miss World and LFC fan Rosanna Davison!
