There are so many others who should be leaving instead

A great deal of media buzz has surrounded our number 4 and a Scottish midfielder over the last couple days. I have read reports with titles like, “Raul on his way to Inter” and “Adam taking Melwood medical” and quite frankly I am not impressed. Where do we draw the line? How do we know what transfer speculation to believe and what not to? I understand that a lot of it is just banter and fans blogging about what they want for the Reds, but when we see claims such as those quoted above it disturbs me. Every day I awaken to new transfer possibilities, or, probabilities rather. However, this article’s purpose is not to complain but rather to ask, why is there even talk of Meireles leaving?

The Portuguese play-maker had a good season last season scoring some telling goals for the Reds. Not only that, but I think he fulfilled the ‘Stevie G’ vacancy very well. Even though he was not involved in all of the crucial goals for Liverpool I feel that he was the driving force behind a lot of them. His most memorable moments came against Chelsea, Everton and Wolves; the goal against Wolves being Liverpool’s only contender for Premier League goal of the season.

The player grew in confidence as he got more and more game time last season and started showing us his true abilities. He was great at Porto and I still believe he can be great at Liverpool. He adapted well to the Premiership’s pace and physicality. He copes under pressure and takes his time on the ball. Most would say that his passing range is not absolutely world class but I think he is good enough for us in this period. He can also play in a variety of roles, one of which is on the right of midfield and we have seen he has great crossing ability and anticipation. I’m sure you’ll agree too that he can strike a very good long shot.

yeh true it will be a shame to see him go….our midfield have been so bad after the departure of X-MAN XABI ALONSO .and it has cost us our place in the top 4 .then we saw macherano left us …but after the arrival of meireles and lucas good form it is now looking abit okay…please dont sell Raul now n we will straggle to find a good combination to match with stevie g …

yes i trust and love king kenny but on this one i beg to differ.why sell raul?

  • Marty says:

would be disgusted if he was forced out to make room for charlie adam…… how can the PFA fans player of the year, be sold after one season, sorry forced out because he’s not british… complete disgrace… and thats the way it’s looking, that he will be making way for mediocre british players… ya cant compete for trophies when ya sell your best players, ya wud think dalglish and comolli would realise that…. starting to get frustrated at the goins on in this transfer markets, and on top of that, it looks like they are gonna choose downing over juan mata, another big mistake and totally against what they said about buying young talent, downing is almost 27 :S its not making sense… this british policy is doin my head in….

i feel bad whenever i read abt raul leaving,we are complaining of being short of world class player and we want to sell raul for adam whom does not have topflight esperience.shame to see him leave.

  • Eric says:

I would be very disappointed if Raul Meireles is sold just because Kenny wants to make space for the over hyped Charlie Adam and I’m pretty sure many fans would agree with me on this matter. If Kenny wants to make space for his new midfielders then he should be looking to get rid of Poulsen, Spearing, Aquilani, Cole and Jovanovic istead, not Meireles. Why is Kenny even considering selling Meireles when so many other midfielders should go instead? Why should the signing of Henderson force Meireles out when clearly, Meireles is at this stage still much better than him. To make things worse, why should the possible signing of an average Adam signal the departure of Meireles. Meireles is a top player and does not deserve to be treated like this by Kenny. It’s absolutely ridiculous how Kenny is trying to get rid of a top midfielder just because he wants to accommodate the likes of Henderson and Adam who are both inferior to Meireles.

“in him we trust” OBVIOUSLY NOT!! if we can make a profit then i say sell him, an above average season yes! but shirks too many challenges for my liking.
i agree the other 5 should definitely go but i also think adam and hendo certainly allow us to sacrafice raul too! add any two of the wingers we are being linked with and i seriously don’t think it will take the fans too long to get over the loss of raul!

I think this talk of him leaving has something to do with the fact Liverpool is trying to sign Adam and have signed Henderson. Too many midfielders.
Another reason would be his age, after one more season Liverpool would be unable to get what they paid to get him.

But I would like to keep him as I’m unsure about Adam.

I think key issue for Liverpool will be what wingers they will sign and I’m very worried because I see Downing linked while players like Mata and Hazard not as much. These players should be priority and Downing or N’Zogbia a becup option because Liverpool could face some competition for signing top class players.
Marko Marin would also be a good otpion, young, promising, not so expensive.

Liverpool will get rid of players they need to let go, as soon as some clubs that may need them get money from selling players.

  • Callaghan says:

It’s not what I would want but he’s being sold because he’s 28. We can sell for £14m now or practically nothing in two years time.

If he is on £60k per week now and he moves on a free or nominal fee in two years time, it means his total cost is something like £180k per week when you include depreciation at £7m per season.

    Sad but true. That’s business

The £14m is enough to buy Nzogbia and Adam who both could be sold on for what we paid for them or more in three years time.

I like Meireles but he doesn’t fit into FSG guidelines. I fully expect Poulsen, Cole & Co to be off-loaded also.

  • Selepay says:

Pls kenny dont allow what happen in alonsos case to repeat now pls keep maireles buy adams lone jonjo

  • Will says:

@ Callaghan. At least someone on here has an idea of how to run a club in the real world of FFP rules, players values dropping with age, homegrown rules (with much stricter ones likely on the way).
Before people start doubting the management ability of the one of the top 3 mangers the premier league has seen and top 3 ever at the club, perhaps you could educate yourselves a bit on how a modern football club needs to be run.
In 18 mths time Meireles will be worth half what he is now, due to A. age and B. lack of games

This ‘how can Kenny be so stupid to sell a fans favourite, does he no nothing?’ etc. is completely ignorant commentary.

  • Will says:

And comparing Meireles sale to that of Alonso???
    Don’t make me laugh…

  • Erin says:

35 million for Carol? The jury is still out. 16 for Henderson? Javi Martinez would cost that. I think we are getting ripped off. This whole buy British policy is doing my head in.
We go for Downing, Arsenal for Mata.
Am i the only one who thinks we have too many players who should be kicked out? Starting with Joe Cole (the English Messi, who cant run 90 minutes).
Plus, we have no recognisable left back. Our central defence needs looking into ASAP. Instead, we shell even more money on Charlie Adam. The Blackpool season wonder.
Whilst i agree that we should have English players, We are not here to supply Capello with players. Liverpool comes first.
I really hope Kenny and Comolli know what they are doing.

  • Andy Thompson says:

I think you mean: There are so many others who should be leaving as well!

If we are going to be going 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 next season how many central midfielders do we need?
