You Can’t Always Get What You Want Maxi

Maxi Rodriguez has said today that he would like a return to his old club in Argentina, Newell’s Old Boys:

“When I left here, I knew I was coming back. The president (Guillermo Lorente) called me and I said yes. Now it depends on the contract I have in Liverpool, maybe that can be loosened a little.”

Going by the last sentence, Maxi is kind of intimating he may try and persuade the Reds to let him out of his contract so he can return to his native Argentina.

Of course many top stars love to return home for the twilight of their careers, but Maxi is still only 30 years of age, and would still command a significant figure if he were to be sold now.

Many footballers return to their home countries when they’re either out of contract or over the hill, and I believe Maxi is in neither situation at this moment in time. He still has two years left on his contract, and his 7 goals in 4 games at the end of last season suggests he still has what it takes to perform at the top level when the occasion demands.

For sure, there have been times over the last year and half since his move from Atletico Madrid when he hasn’t performed to his best, but he is currently a crucial part of the first team squad. The Argentine gives the Reds much needed options on both the right and left wings, and seemed to enjoy the fluid formation adapted by Kenny Dalglish in the latter stages of the season. The pass and move football, combined with an interchanging of positions, helped Maxi to get into dangerous areas of the pitch and score goals.

what on earth makes you think he commands any fee? LFC bought him for 1.5M GBP. its not like he’s improved since then. also, he’s got like 2 years left on his contract (no big difference from when we got him) but he’s also older. at 30 years old, that’s not much leverage.

besides, he would need suitors for LFC to be able to put a price tag on him. at best we would re-coup this amount.

based on the focus on younger players, LFC would probably be happy just to get his wages off the books.

Art…you are a complete moron and I’m sick to death of reading posts like yours.

Of course he demands a fee, we’re not in the business of giving players away for free and considering his age and ability we should get at least double what we paid for him.

Thank god idiots like you don’t run the club or perhaps they did and they just went back to Texas!
