When Kenny Dalglish returned to Liverpool midway through last season, the side had a dramatic upturn in fortunes. What was great about this period was that a number of young players were given a chance, and most of them took it and performed outstandingly well; Jay Spearing, Martin Kelly, John Flanagan amongst others, came into the side and did not look out of their depth, and they gained vital first team experience.

Which is why Liverpool’s transfer spending this summer is a worry, where do these players-and those coming up behind them-fit after Liverpool’s big summer spending? Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing will provide much needed strength in depth, but will they keep out players who could have gained vital experience for the future? Will the youngsters who did so well at the back end of last season just be destined for bit-part appearances as substitutions and in the Carling Cup?

There is no pressure on Dalglish, and although every Liverpool fan wants to get back into the Champions League, he could really have used the next season or two, to blood and fully develop the youngsters he already has into a really solid team that could be successful for years to come. One of the best things Rafael Benitez did when at the club-aside from bringing a fifth Champions League title to Merseyside-was put a winning structure in place at the academy. Under the guidance of Jose Segura and Rodolfo Borrell, Liverpool have quickly developed an academy program that is capable of competing with any of the others around the world. The structure is in place, and they have started to produce some really good players, but the importance of giving these players a chance and not always looking to invest in short-term, big money signings, is key.

i feel sick. Tottenham are now linked with Affelay and Mata and we are linked to Shane Long. Surely we will make 1 marquee signing of world class quality.

Who said that Liverpool will continue to buy so many players once Kenny decides that the young lads are ready.Look at the bigger picture… build a stadium when the young lads are ready so the money we have can go further! Build a stadium while buying expensive players is difficult. So, buy now and build the stadium when the young lads are ready to play and buying expensive new players is not needed. Get into the Champions League asap so we have more money and the best players are more encouraged to join us. New fans see the success and begin to follow our team and buy club merchandise. Everybody wins!!!! YNWA

What nonsense Adam and Downing aren’t getting any younger???? Adam is 25 and Dowining is 26. Get your facts straight.

    Rubbish!

Jordan Henderson is 2-3 years ahead of any of the young midfielders in the Academy. Apart from the precocious talent that is Raheim Sterling there are no other wing players in the Academy ready for 1st team football! In fact apart from Jonathon Flanagan none of the academy graduates are ready for a full time 1st team spot. That said even Flanagan is behind Glen Johnson! Please don’t say Kelly is ahead of Johnson!!! Johnson was impeccable at both right and left back under Dalglish.
We have some really talented you players however let’s not get carried away eh!!!

Kelly IS ahead of Johnson.thats why Johnson was moved to left back.if Kelly stayed fully fit,Johnson wouldnt have seen right back for the rest of the season.

First of all I am very excited at what Dalglish will field out. Dont forget, in some games last year Dalglish fielded a 3 5 2 formation. Imagine that with the stacked midfield we now have.
    Johnson—-Carragher—-Agger
    Kuyt—Lucas—Adam—Downing
    Gerrard
    Carrol—Suarez
LOOL. And the bench still has Meireles, Aquilani, Maxi, Skrytl, Kelly,Henderson, Ngog, Spearing or Cole.
WOOOWWW! I have such a big grin on my face right now just thinking of the possibilities. And last but least, Kenny Dalglish. The last manager to win us the title is back. This is just too romantic. I see to many people having a go at critizing liverpool players. Honestly who do they think they are. Get behind the team and show the kind of support that only “Liverpool fans” can give.
