Liverpool have had some great defenders over the past few decades which have helped the club to unparalleled success. Players such as Ron Yeats, Tommy Smith, Alan Hansen and Phil Neal have really been the building blocks of both Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley’s trophy winning sides. There are however, especially over the last 20 years, a fair few defenders that have fallen way below the standards expected in a Reds shirt. Many of them came in the reigns of Graeme Souness and Roy Evans, and the lack of solidity at the back contributed heavily to Liverpool’s decline during the 90s.
