A Transfer Rumour That Makes Absolutely No Sense

I don’t read much from the Daily Mirror but this transfer rumour made me laugh quite a bit. According to James Nursey, Liverpool are lining up Lucas Biglia of Anderlecht as a replacement for Lucas Leiva who may be sent out on loan:

“Brazilian ace Leiva, 24, was the Reds’ player of the season last term and penned a big-money new deal in March. But boss Kenny Dalglish may loan him out after bringing in expensive midfielders Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing this summer. If Leiva does go, Liverpool will need a cut-price replacement to deputise and protect the back four.”

There are so many things in this statement that make no sense at all, it is laughable. Firstly, Nursey comments that Lucas is Liverpool’s Player of the Season and that he signed a new contract back in March. Why on Earth would the Reds send a player out on loan when he has just signed a new deal and has a manager who recently was singing his praises?:

“He was fantastic for us last season and we’re looking forward to getting him back as well and he should be well rested.”

Secondly, despite Liverpool bringing in  “expensive midfielders” Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing, none of them play in the holding midfield role which Lucas has made his own, and in fact the Reds are actually short of numbers in this area anyway, especially if Christian Poulsen departs this summer.

Thirdly, why would we send out a player on loan only to then bring in another player on the cheap? Surely if Lucas Leiva was surplus to requirements you would sell him out right and then bring in a quality replacement to ensure the holding midfield area is well stocked.

In any case, there isn’t much point in getting too miffed with such stories. It is a consequence of the behind closed door policy now in place at Anfield. Journalists have no idea what is in Kenny Dalglish’s mind so they resort to either making up stories, or relying on some very unreliable sources.

With the Mirror’s reputation of unreliability too, it really isn’t surprising but it is frustrating that such rumours then spread to other papers and websites where they are re-printed ad verbatim.

With Lucas back in training, and in line to feature for some part of the match against Valencia at the weekend, I will be looking forward to seeing the Brazilian back in action.
