Lawro: Benitez was right on this Brazilian

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes Lucas is now one of the first names on the team-sheet. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Daily Post:

“Lucas Leiva has made huge steps during the last two years, and clearly feels part of the furniture. I really feel he has stepped up to the plate since Javier Mascherano left. Lucas was inevitably playing second fiddle to Mascherano and now he is one of the first names on the team-sheet. When he first arrived, people wondered whether he really was Brazilian, but he has now become the player Benitez always claimed he could be.”

Lawro also hopes prospective new signing Sebastian Coates can make a good impact:

“Liverpool have another new arrival imminent in Sebastian Coates. At 6ft5ins, my only concern would be if he has the pace to recover against some of the smaller, nippier strikers. That’s always an issue with very tall centre-backs. I’m sure we won’t see much of Coates for a few months, but if he does appear in that time then he’ll have made a good impression on Dalglish.”

At last one of our ex-players, a pundit and over the last couple odf years – a very real critic of Rafael Benitez – has given some credit both to Lucas and to the faith Rafa had in the player.

Lucas was never a bad player, he was a young foreign player in a midfield consisting of Maschers, Alonso and the awesome Gerard. How could he ever have looked good enough? Maschers plays for Barca (the team they have ever had); Alonso was the cornerstone of our team now the same with Real and the national side.
As for Gerard well, words from me won’t ever do him justice. In my opinion, the best midfielder LFC has ever had the best midfielder of his generation. Any player that out shines Roy Keane must be awesome – he is.
Lucas has stuck at his task, faith placed him by Rafa was and is well founded despite two managerial changes and the demise of both the team and club until now.
The first name on the team sheet? Yes, but only until Gerard is fit….
Well done Lucas. The most non Brazilian of Brazilian players has and will continue to shun the critics…!

So you think Gerrard will take Lucas’s place in the team. Well I hope not.

Gerrard will most probably take the place of Henderson, because Gerrard cannot, I repeat, cannot play as a defensive midfielder if we are to progress. He is not disciplined enough and he gives the ball away to easily. He also goes walkabout to often when he should be holding his position. Why should Gerrard automatically get his place back when fit, he must earn his place because the team is playing well at the moment?
Adam is also not a defensive midfielder, he’s a forward thinking attacking central midfielder. I can see Lucas being a permanent fixture in this Liverpool team for a long time to come, and he’s earned it.

Mark Lawrenson is an idiot as most in the know Liverpool fans will testify, and there are a few other ex-Liverpool players like him out there as well

Paseo is an idiot and was anti-Rafa!

Gerrard will be an automatic selection no doubt, but he will be up front just behind Suarez.

I don’t think Jim meant Gerrard will replace Lucas, just that Gerrard’s name will be first on the team sheet, most likely followed by Lucas’s…
