Lawro: It would have been a shock for Dalglish

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes the way Reds players lost their composure against Tottenham would have come as a bit of a surprise to manager Kenny Dalglish. He wrote in his column for the Liverpool Daily Post:

“With things going wrong, one or two of Liverpool’s players lost their heads and lost their discipline. Even people like Luis Suarez were berating team-mates. There has not been any previous sign of that at all, so it will have come as a bit of a shock for Dalglish. The red cards were completely avoidable. In big games such as these, you have to keep thinking on your feet. Everybody knows you get two yellows and you are off, regardless of whether you think the first was a booking or not. You have to be really careful. Charlie Adam isn’t the quickest and has to be 100% certain when he goes into the tackle that he is going to get there. Yet he didn’t, and was sent off. And Skrtel was just bonkers for picking up a second yellow. There’s not much the manager can do about decision-making like that.”

Lawro believes the Reds got their tactics wrong against Spurs:

“Liverpool, though, thought they could have a go at Tottenham as they aren’t the best defensively. But they had no platform to build attacks from, and it meant every time Tottenham had the ball they looked like they would score. Liverpool were just continually sliced through. You could possibly go to Arsenal and even Chelsea with a centre-back as right-back because neither team plays with great width, but you can’t visit the likes of Tottenham or Manchester United and expect to get away with it.”

LAWRO, Skrtel playing at right back was just plain bonkers, their was plenty Dalglish could have done about that. He got it wrong, their is not much Skrtel can do about decision making like that!

  • Jay says:

So he is basically Spurs a far superior to Liverpool

And us not being the best defensively is a laugh, When we have Ledley at the back we dont concede, Friedel is one of the best keepers, Walker is a regular in the england squad, Kaboul is the french centre back and Ekotto is the best left back in the league, this was confirmed to me by Nanis demolition job on Cole

    • Tony says:

Mate, you cannot argue with 8 goals conceded in 4 games, very few clean sheets last season, and having to win most games from losing positions… I think this is Lawro’s way of saying that we attack more than we defend….’arry’s way…

      • DAVSPURS says:

Tony if you do your home work too things ha and Ady help us win and keep the ball longer. With these three we have won two scored 6 conceded 0 none of these played against Utd and City last season King played three games and we won all three. So Lawro was right too say Kenny got his tactics wrong but wrong to say our defense was weak i will bet any money that defense would not conceded 8 goals even with any of the three Goalkeepers we have in nets. You should have noticed we have three different places that has made us stronger since the Manchester games defence midfield and attack all quality Liverpool have Skyrtl Adams Carroll we had King Parker Adebayor Tactics my arsethe problem was Spurs had more quality missing than Liverpool had on the field Sandro Dawson Lennon Pienaar Gallas would all get in the Liverpool team hat we beat. Comoli could get Liverpool there but just like it took us a few years too succeed Gerrard and Bellamy Kuyt Coats will help for now.

        • cyril says:

fully agree, it is the usual sloppiness from lawro; does he get paid for this tripe. all he did was remember the two defeats and add 2 to 2 and get 5. of course he did not stop and think about ledley and parker

    • Gerrardious says:

If u think Ekoto is beta than Ashley Cole, Evra, and (most especially) Baines, then u’re clearly delusional.

      • Joe says:

Leighton Baines is nothing special. Remember watching him against Mexico and he was continually ripped to shreads. Much rather stick with one of the most under rated left backs in the league, you can keep Baines.

If you look at both sides on Sunday only Suerez and Reina would get in the Spurs team.

Adams is good going forward but weak defensively, Henderson wasn’t even the best player at Sunderland, Downing rarely goes past a man to cross a ball so has to do so from to far back making it easy to defend against, Carroll will be good but does he want to be?

Over paying for players does not make them better, Liverpool bought 3 average players (Henderson, Downing, Adams) for stupid money and Carroll is not worth £35 million either.

        • Tony says:

          Amen!

The press often get confused by price, and with the exception of Saurez this is a clear example of the Emperors new clothes- collective halucination.

How on earth are Liverpool going to get into the CL when they buy players who by and large are Europa Cup standard. Only Saurez, Reina and Gerrard are up to the required standard, plus maybe Enrique will develop.

  • Chris D says:

    Spurs fan here.
The only criticism I would make of Liverpool would be that 442 away from home was too much of a risk.
Injuries dictated that Skrtel played at full back, another body in midfield would have given him some cover.
Bad day at the office, move on.

  • Lawro Hater says:

I feel for Liverpool ….really but can argue all you want about the two cards , Spurs were better.

    FUN FACT:

    Did You Know???…
That If Lawros predictions for Tottenham had all been correct in 10/11 season , Tottenham would been relegated.

  • andyspur says:

lawro is a clown ,still living in the eighties .spurs had a bad start against the two best teams in the league and have since added Adebayor and parker .every week he predicts spurs to lose or draw and liverpool to win.how many pool players would make it in to spurs team.i’d say one ,Reina.stop looking at football through rose coloured spectacles .

    • TommyHarmer says:

Spurs supporter here ……. Raina is better than Brad, Enrique is way above Walker, Suarez is MUCH better than Jermaine, and Downing is better wide than either Lennon or Krank ….. and yes we were good, but Liverpool self-destructed in their desire to get back in. Until they lost Adams, we were better by virtue of a great goal, but Liverpool gave us trouble even with ten players. Bale ran past Skertal a lot, but what did he do then? They will be back, and are still our main rivals for fourth/fifth spot. Why do we seem to exaggerate? We are always either brilliant or tripe!!

      • Jamsey2011 says:

Mate, you are deluded. Are you sure you are a Spurs fan?! I’m all for keeping calm and pointing out that though the result was excellent, it was just one result, however, we dominated Liverpool from start to finish. Even when it was 11 v 11, they couldn’t contain us. They had a free kick (which Suarez dived to get) and nothing else. Oh and your player v player analysis – what is that based on? Bizarre!

      • macca says:

        Tommy

just one other thing Enrique is a left back and Walker a right back!!! If you play players out of position you end up with a Skrtel.

      • Tony says:

Downing…..oh my God. There is a facebook site called” Stuart Downing is the most overrated player on the planet”. He cannot beat a player for pace. As for Enrique good player but he’s a LEFT back, and not in the same class as BAE. There is however one thing that screams out at you about Liverpool- they lack pace EVERYWHERE. Carragher, Skrtel, Downing, Carroll, Lucas all have no pace, and we havn’t even started on Charlie “I’ll get there as soon as I can” Adam.

  • bill spurs says:

aahhh poor Mark Lawrenson his liverpool were beat and shown up – i bet he predicted a liverpool win as he dose every week.

    what a great game

i forget Mark Lawrenson what was the score again!

    come on you spurs

  • florida pete says:

Lawro’s predictions, haha, what a joke, shame I cant be there to watch him squirm on MOTD…On paper we do have a good defense, but they all seem to go walkabout at some stage of the game..Dawson had nightmare v City, but King does seem to bring a calming influence…Ekotto best LB in the league, hmm, not quite, maybe Evra just has him on that..Kaboul, well I change my mind about him on a weekly basis..If we’d have got Cahill I could def see a top 4 finish…

  • Lawro hater says:

Lawro cant predict any thing he is a total waste of space, mug.

  • Lawro hater says:

he hate Spurs and we hate Lawro,

TommyHarmer ,Enrique is a left back,Walker is a right back BAE is way better than Enrique.Downing is a left winger(dalglish hasnt figured that out yet) ,no where near Bale and suarez wuouldnt get in our team ahead of VDV

    • Paul F says:

I’m as realistic as they come but your analysis is duff. Enrique wouldnt get in the Spurs reserve team. The guy was relegated with Newcastle (when he could get in the team, that is). A few decent performances towards the end of last season doesnt make him decent. He is a hopeless defender – have you actually seen him play?

Suarez is probably better than Defoe not decisively tho – its still early days for Suarez). However as any Dutchman will tell you, Suarez is not as good as VDV – not even close. So he’s only geting in the Spurs team is they play 2 up top. Operate with split stikers and its VDV all day long.

Raina is very marginally better than Friedel. He is a lot younger of course so worth a lot more, but for this season, there isnt a cigarette paper between them. Any Villa fan will tell you who the best keeper in the league was last season. And he sure as hell wasnt playing for Lpool.

A fit Stevie G makes the Spurs team, but after that you’d have a long line of SPurs midfielder to pick from before you’d bother with a Pool one. Modric, Parker, Sandro, Huddlestone, Lennon, Bale, Kranjkar…

  • andyspur says:

you can tell we were better by the lack of response from scousers on their own site

  • Ynwa says:

This is the situation, as it is NOW under KD.

1- KD thinks that he can go back to the 70’s and 80’s, times, by buying british, after all we won four European Cups than, did we not?.

2- Someone should tell KD that, we will NOT win anything nowadays, with that formula!.
Players are more tacticly aware, excluding our three signings,of Adams,Henderson and Carroll, from this, as they are miles away from being tacticly minded, and HUGELY OVERATED and OVERPRICED!.

3- The disgracefull selling of quality players, like AQUILANI and MEIRELES, and replaced by AVERAGE one’s in Adams and Henderson!

So wake up KD, it is 2011 and NOT the 80’s, because if you don’t, we’ll end up worse than under Hodgson, wich I would have thought impossible, but with your current purchases, I regret to say, that it is looking more and more of becoming reality.

  • Cal says:

Ynwa, if u would care to check, u would have known that both aqualini and meireles wanted to go. and last time i checked suarez coates doni enrique are not british. get yr facts straight before coming here to embarass yourself

    • Ynwa says:

@Cal…..What have I said?,didn’t I say BUYING BRITISH is NOT the way forward (no tactical awareness. You don’t even realise, that you’re agreeing with my analsys, by stating yourself and

‘last time i checked suarez coates doni enrique are not british’. UNQUOTE.

By YOU saying that, you are in agreement with me that, buying foreign is buying you have more chance of getting QUALTY, and at a much cheaper price. We paid £60mil+ for three donkeys, in Adam,Henderson and Carrol….and that’s a fact!!!

  • Kenny says:

If Dalglish wants the fans to get off his back, he should start making sensible decisions. He should tell Carragher that he is only a sub from now on. He should face facts and realise that Suarez and Kuyt should be one striker pairing and that Carroll and Bellamy should be the backup striker pairing. He should put Johnson on the rightwing if he ever comes back from injury and leave Downing on the leftwing permanently. If he plays Henderson at all then play him in the centre of midfield beside Lucas or Spearing. The only place Adam or Gerrard should play is behind Suarez in away games and drop Kuyt to the bench.

    @Ynwa
Pardon me, was it u who said kenny lives in the past and thinks that buying british is the way forward? i told u to check his buyings which ARE NOT based upon where the players were born and that is a fact. btw by comparing a legend to a clown makes me wonder if u r a True lfc fan.

  • Catcher says:

I love seeing Hanson and Lawrenson eating humble pie, open wide boys here is another slice.

  • Brendan says:

Liverpool did not address how week they are back, Jamie Carragher is done, skertal and Agger have no leadership qualities, Enrique is a decent left back but the whole defence needs to work as a unit not individually. With Arsenal almost out of the race Spurs really should push on and claim 4th. COYS

  • TH says:

I watched the game and am a Spurs fan and I wanted to say one thing about Liverpool.
The Liverpool team did not compete. If you don’t compete you lose and there is no tactical, formation, or personnel changes that can have made any significant difference.
I still think Liverpool are going to be in the top 6 in May as are Spurs. I would not be surprised if the outcome of being dismantled by Spurs is a good run of one defeat in the next eight. Dalglish will get them back competing.
