The Reds haven’t been too shy of spending a bit when they have needed to over the years. They broke their transfer record 4 times during the 1960s as Bill Shankly persuaded the board of the merits of spending on the likes of Ian St John and Emlyn Hughes; money well spent to say the least! The Reds continued in the same vein in the 1970s and spent a record amount on our greatest ever player. With the departure of the American cowboys, the arrival of FSG also saw a return to some significant transfer fees being paid with one certain Geordie being bought for top dollar.
