3 Things We Learned Against West Brom

|

Liverpool can win without Steven Gerrard – It’s a sad thing that he’s coming to the end of his career before this has started to occur but Liverpool football club no longer relies on having Steven Gerrard fit to win games convincingly. For over a decade it has been a common misconception of the press and, at times, within the club that Liverpool football club are incapable of winning without their captain and ‘talisman’ but after a brief few week cameo where all Reds fans were reminded of what he can add to the side, he was injured again and it barely warranted a headline.

This is a double-edged sword though, as it means that, while Steven Gerrard’s powers are beginning to wane to the point where he can be ‘rested’ from time-to-time without too much of a fuss being made, Liverpool can now look to a future where finding his direct and equal replacement isn’t a vital necessity. Whether you look on this as a positive or negative is up to you.

Liverpool can defend without Jamie Carragher – It has been a fact in my mind for at least 2 years but it has seemingly only just now started to dawn on the vast majority of Liverpool fans (particularly after a competent and confident performance from Agger and Skrtel) who forever thought Carragher was of the same bloodline as Maldini. I have been pushing for years for these two to be paired together and yes, for the sake of the pedantic amongst you, I only mean when Agger has managed to not be injured. People are quick to point out that Skrtel has his faults and according to some, he is dire and shouldn’t even call himself a footballer. However, people would do well to remember a certain Stephane Henchoz and perhaps even Jamie Carragher pre-Rafa Benitez.

By themselves, these were ordinary men who were below-average footballers at best. Put them with a man who perfectly complements their abilities (lack of?) and you had a Liverpool defence that was of the best in Europe for near a decade. Sure, Sami Hyypia played an enormous part in that but having a partner like this often elevates players to a greater level. As single footballers Agger and Skrtel have their strengths; Agger’s technically gifted, quick and confident, Skrtel is good in the air, strong and a tough tackler. Both are still relatively young so will only become more tactically aware as they gain more experience together but on paper they could be as good a partnership as any we’ve had, if only they were given the opportunity. Without wanting to write again of Carragher’s demise, it is time he was put aside and these two were allowed to flourish.
