More Wins Away than at Home – What’s going on?

|

Liverpool’s form away from home in recent times has been fairly poor. In 2010, the club won just two league games on the road, at Burnley under Rafa Benitez and at Bolton under Roy Hodgson. So the fact that the Reds have won six out of eight away fixtures in all competitions so far this season shows how far the side has come.

However, the results at Anfield this season have been a little underwhelming. While Liverpool are still unbeaten at home, and there is no shame in drawing against Manchester United, dropped points against Sunderland and Norwich City are a cause for concern. If Kenny Dalglish’s men had won those latter two games, as they should have, they would be joint third in the table right now.

The club’s rivals for a top four spot, the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal, have all dropped points in just one of their home games so far during this campaign. This is where Liverpool must improve. While the sides around them continue to triumph in the games they would expect to win on home turf, the Reds are struggling and dropping points which could prove the difference at the end of the season.

Midfielder Lucas Leiva has recognised this problem, and says he wants Anfield to become a fortress again, as it has been in recent years when Liverpool have picked up the majority of their points there. He told Liverpool Daily Post:

“The points that we have dropped, especially in the home games, could be crucial in the end but I am still really confident that we will have a good season. We have to make sure we get the points we need, especially at home, because that will be very important for us.”

I am currently studying Sports Journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. I have recently finished my first year of the course, and I am hoping to hone my skills by writing pieces for live4liverpool.

I have supported Liverpool since the age of 6, and in that time my favourite player has been Robbie Fowler. My favourite match was the 2005 Champions League final against AC Milan.

I have just watched Real Madrid demolish Osasuna 7 – 1. Had Liverpool been playing Osasuna at Anfield it’s a safe bet the visitots would have got a draw.
The fact is that the football Liverpool play is terribly sterile and predictable. I doubt if they will score seven goals between now and Xmas, certainly not if Dalglish persists in playing the biggest transfer disaster in the history of the club. Thirty-five million pounds for a player no better than N’gog. What was Dalglish thinking?
