TWO Summer Signings We Can Be Truly Thankful For

|

It is fair to say that Kenny Dalglish’s summer signings never exactly led to much over excitement from reds fans, but one thing they certainly have done is improve the overall quality within the squad. Whereas a year ago, we were bemoaning the fact that Raul Meireles was the only summer signing that could call himself a success, this year there a few contenders for best new addition to the squad.

Arguably the best of the summer signings are Jose Enrique and Charlie Adam. Failing to sign a player would usually be a negative thing but reading Gael Clichy’s interview recently where he stated that he chose Manchester City over Liverpool made me appreciate what his failed capture led to for us. In my opinion, Liverpool have arguably the best left back in the league in the shape of Jose Enrique, and the scary thing is, there’s room for him to improve.

The Spaniard’s speed, strength and determined attitude have made him a hit with the Kop and I believe it’s only a matter of time before he is called up to the Spain national squad where the left back slot is actually one of their weaker positions. For his sake I’m hopeful that he makes enough of an impression this season to land himself a place in Spain’s Euro 2012 squad, where the experience would no doubt benefit the former Newcastle man.

The other star signing from the summer is Charlie Adam. The signing of the Scot was probably the one I was most excited about during the summer transfer window, and so far he has proved himself to be one of the bargains of the season. Due to his style of play, Charlie Adam has been compared to Xabi Alonso for a long while now, with ex-Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie even going as far as saying Adam has the ability to be better than the Spaniard. I, like a lot of reds fans, really rate Alonso, and it’s obvious that his departure hurt the squad deeply, but you can’t deny that having Adam in the team certainly has softened the blow.

Alonso truly excelled in his deep lying playmaker role during his time at Anfield, and in the two seasons since his departure, Liverpool’s midfield has missed his array of passes. Charlie Adam obviously isn’t a like for like replacement for Alonso but has certainly taken the reigns by becoming the new man our players rely on to direct the play. Defensively Adam probably cannot match Alonso but going forward he certainly can bring more to the table than the Spaniard did due to his eye for goal and impressive amount of assists.

Little by little, the squad is being strengthened with top class players, and so far it must be said that Jose Enrique and Charlie Adam have certainly earned their place in the first XI of a very strong Liverpool team. I have to say I am thankful to Dalglish and Comolli for having the vision to sign both Adam and Enrique for bargain prices and with so much to play for in 2012, I expect the pair to become even more key to Liverpool’s cause over the course of the season.

What makes Enrique undroppable is the fact that he is physically the best left back in world football and that is not an over statement. Add to that the fact he is always composed and focused makes the left side of our midfield nion impregnable. Defensive collosus, approx 1 out of 20 attacks will get through – out of luck and bounce of the ball more than anything. The only downside is he doesnt score but if he did he would be the best left back in football and one of the best players in the world. To be fair there arnt that many great left backs out there which makes the status of best in the world easier but that should not take anything away from the fact he is a player of sumpreme quality.

I didn’t know much about Charlie Adam but since Liverpool made the purchase, i have become one of his greatest fans. His long passes passes can be compared to none other than The Great Xabi Alonso.
Jose Enrique i must say is probably the most unluckiest left backs in the world. in such a great form and still not to be called up for Spain is really depressing. He should continue training harde
r because that left back position for Spain is his for taking. i will end here with the greatest phrase ever
    YOU’LL NEVER WALK
