It’s been a great start to the week for Martin Skrtel as the Liverpool defender clinched his second award in as many days after being voted Slovakian Player of the Year.
Skrtel beat Italian-based opposition in the form of Napoli’s impressive attacking midfielder Marek Hamsik, as well as Genoa’s Juraj Kucka in the voting, making it the third time Liverpool’s number 37 has won the award.
Just hours earlier, Skrtel had played a huge part in helping Liverpool win their first title in 6 years, scoring in the League Cup final victory over Cardiff City at Wembley. It was Skrtel’s first piece of silverware with Reds, whom he joined in 2008 after winning the UEFA Cup with Zenit St. Petersburg.
“I think everybody plays football for the trophies and that was our first one and I hope there will be more and more.” Skrtel commented after the drama of winning in the penalty shoot-out.

Well done Rafa, £6.5 million now worth £20 million and proving it, the doubters are very quiet.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Skrtel! On Sunday we saw Liverpool’s Skrtel power!
Haha! Skrtel Power! Cowabunga dude…
That is great news for Martin and the club. I can see how that the comparisons I’ve made between him and Sami are not at all unfounded, as Hyypia himself won half a dozen of these during his career and Skrtel’s already got three himself. Great stuff
