In securing our record 8th League Cup win at Wembley via spot-kicks versus Cardiff, Liverpool confirmed themselves as the undisputed penalty kings of English football.
The Reds have now won 5 major trophies from the dreaded shoot-outs, holding our nerves in two European Cup finals, one FA Cup final and now two League Cup finals – comfortably a record for English clubs and possibly Europe according to FIFA.com.
However, taking a global view of teams who’ve won the most major trophies via penalties sees Argentine giants Boca Juniors just pipping the Reds, with 6 victories.
The boys from La Bombonera winning 3 Copa Libertadores (’77, ’00, ’01), the Copa Sudamericana in ’05, the Supercopa Sudamericana in’89, as well as the Intercontinental Cup back in ’03.
