Liverpool FC’s Martin Kelly has been called into the England squad to replace Chelsea centre back Gary Cahill, who has been ruled out with a double fracture of his jaw.

In a statement on their website, the FA revealed that Kelly’s call-up is subject to agreement from UEFA’s medical team. Kelly made his international debut during last weekend’s friendly against Norway, when he came on as a late substitute to replace Phil Jones at right back.

After Jordan Henderson was called into the squad to replace Frank Lampard, Kelly’s inclusion means that six Liverpool players will represent England at Euro 2012. Kelly and Henderson join Glen Johnson, Stewart Downing, Andy Carroll and Liverpool and England skipper Steven Gerrard.

Kelly has previously represented England for the Under-21s, Under-20s and Under-19s. He made 20 appearances for Liverpool this season in all competitions and scored his first goal for the club during November’s Carling Cup win over Chelsea.

The call-up prompted Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who has not been included in England’s Euro 2012 squad – being snubbed for the second time, to take to Twitter with the words: ‘What reasons?????!!!’
