LIVERPOOL captain and talisman Steven Gerrard believes that the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as manager signals the beginning of “an exciting new era” for the Merseyside club.

Rodgers appointment came nearly two months ago as the replacement for Kenny Dalglish, after the latter had fallen out of favour with the club’s American owners following a poor Premier League campaign.

Rodgers achieved promotion from the Championship with Swansea at the first time of asking, via the play-offs, and guided the Welsh outfit to a more than respectable eleventh placed finish in their first Premier League campaign.

Gerrard, who has won every top honour in club football with the exception of the Premier League, is confident that Rodgers can return success to Liverpool and have them lifting silverware again in the near future.

Gerrard has just returned to Liverpoool duty following an extended break, after his exertions captaining England at the recent European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, but has been keeping a close eye on proceedings.

Speaking at a Press Conference ahead of the club’s tour match with AS Roma at Fenway Park Boston, the Liverpool skipper said:

“It’s an exciting new era for the players. We’ve been looking in from our holidays and hearing what the manager has been saying, what his vision is and what his targets are.

“All we can do is give him our full support and work as hard as we can to make his job easier.

“We had two big cup finals last year, we won one and lost one, and there is certainly a platform there for this team to grow and improve, and with our new manager and coaching staff in place, it’s an exciting time.

“I’m really excited to get going again in the new set up.”

Liverpool and England defender Glen Johnson, who has worked with Rodgers before during his time at Chelsea, also appeared at the Press Conference and he echoed his captain’s words, adding:

“I’m really looking forward to it. I was fortunate enough to work with Brendan before. I know the training will be fantastic and after a long break I’m really eager to get back.

“We’re going to play a passing game. Brendan has done that everywhere he’s gone.”

Liverpool will play AS Roma tonight at 11.30 BST, before concluding their North American tour with a game against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
