LIVERPOOL FC boss Brendan Rodgers has praised Andy Carrolll and, ahead of further talks with the 6ft 4″ striker, Rodgers has confirmed that he thinks the number 9 has come in for plenty of unfair criticism during his time at the club.

There has been growing speculation over the summer surrounding Carroll’s Liverpool future, with many in the media pronouncing that the big striker will not fit in to the new boss’ playing style, but Rodgers has moved to quash those ideas.

“He is a player who can play in a number of styles and it was a wee bit unfair on him [for people] to say he couldn’t fit into the way I would want to play”, said the Northern Irishman.

“There has been a lot of unfair criticism aimed towards Andy.

“For me, your game is based on your players, the players you have. I am here to win games”

Talk of a loan move for Carroll has been whole-heartedly dismissed by Liverpool, however, Carroll’s old club Newcastle are reportedly keen to take him back to his home-town.

Although Liverpool are said to be willing to listen to offers for any player, they are determined not to let Carroll go on the cheap and, with Rodgers looking to build a squad that has plenty of strength in depth, the new boss may well hold on to him.

Rodgers told Sky Sports:

“Andy is a terrific young player. I had a brief chat with all the lads and over the next couple of weeks I’ll be able to speak to them with more confidence and on a one-to-one basis.

“There is no doubt he is a terrific talent. We’ve got a number of very, very talented players in the group, of which Andy is one.”

Can someone kindly tell me what’s going on at LFC please? The squad we have will achieve nothing or is BR too short-sighted to see? We should be ridding the team of joe cole, doni, brad jones, spearing, carragher, danny wilson, gulacsi, pacheco, enrique, and not maxi kuyt, bellamy!

I am already beginning to doubt BR and i’m resigned to seeing LFC in mid-table obscurity for the next 4 yrs. John W Henry should realize he needs to invest at least £60m plus whatever is generated from sales. If Dalglish wasted funds on players not meet for LFC, then FSG must bear it, afterall, they appointed him! Besides, 65% of the outlay was offset by the sale of torres, babel, poulsen, meireles. BR is jeopardizing our season by refusing to move on players not meet for LFC. If we want to progress, certain players must be moved on. Once again, FSG must realize LFC exists not just to play champions league, but to win trophies and the only way to do that is to buy quality players. Champs league means nothing without trophies. If it were not so, nasri, fabregas, adebayor, toure and now van persie won’t seek to leave Arsenal who have been in the champs league for 16 consecutive yrs. Dalglish really messed things up. Firstly, he could have done more to keep torres, and i’m sure nando left when he saw we were not willing to bring in quality players. Also, why would you spend £35m on carroll when you could get falcao for £28m. The excuse that we needed a replacement urgently does not hold as carroll was bought injured and did not play till march. So, why didn’t he just wait till May and splash for falcao? Also, there were many players he could have signed instead of the mediocre brits he went for? (no disrespect meant).

Now to Rodgers, i don’t know why he is delaying in ridding the squad of sub standard players not meet for LFC. I just do not get it as i believe football ain’t rocket science, neither is it calculus!

Charlie Adam; too slow and rash, Joe Cole; offers little, earns much, too old to develop further, Doni, Jones, Wilson; not meet for LFC, Jay Spearing; passion yes, but lacks the requisite skills, Enrique; failed when it mattered most in both finals, Carragher; should honestly retire ASAP; can’t cope with the pace. At this stage, we need only old players that can remain in the team for the next 3 or 4 yrs at top level to help the younger ones with their experience. Right now, only Gerrard and Bellamy falls in that category.

In my humble opinion, cole, doni, jones, carragher, enrique, wilson, pacheco, spearing, skrtel (a good defender, but has never really been in the class of hyypia, agger, lucio etc), gulacsi, aquilani (an excellent technical footballer but injury prone, which will be exacerbated by the physical nature of the premier league, plus earns very high wages to make him a squad player. Charlie adam, nathan eccleston, should be moved on. Their sale should fetch about £32m and free up about £825k per wk in wages when you factor in the departure of maxi, kuyt and aurelio.

Of Dalglish’s signings, henderson should be kept; he’s got good workrate and has potential to develop. To what he develops into however is largely dependent on him what i do believe however is, if he works hard, we’ll be getting a player in the mould of frank lampard. Not flashy, but reliable and consistent. Carroll should be kept and tutoured. He will never have the grace of Torress or Villa, but if we’re patient with him and he works hard, we’ll have a classic English ‘9’ to mix things up. Downing will come good; he needs to take more risks and be a tad calmer to put in his share of goals.

In shelvey we have an unusual english midfielder. Very expressive on the pitch. Just needs to work on his shooting and tackling. Suso and Sterling should NOT be loaned out. They’ll learn more playing with suarez, gerrard and bellars, plus, they’ve got the early stages of the carling and fa cups (when not playing premiership oppositin), as well as the odd game or two in the leage and europa league. In all, if they’re used as suggested, by the end of the season, they could end up making 25 appearances for the first team!

If i was BR, upon moving the said players on, I’d buy
jack butland £8m; £30k per wk, ron vlaar £4m; £40k per wk, mammadou sakho £10m; £55k per wk, jetro willems £5.5m; £25k per wk, leroy fer £6m; £40k per wk, joe allen £12m; £50k per wk, gaston ramirez £16m; £65k per wk, jordan rhodes £4m; £30k per wk.

The players signed will earn a total of about £335 k per wk which is much less than the £800k plus their predecessors earned, plus, they much younger and are already as good, with some (ramirez, allen, fer), being better than the players they’re replacing (cole, adam, spearing). The most important aspect is, they have the ability to develop even further, given their age! Thus, our team will look like this:

    GK
    reina, butland
    SB
    johnson, kelly, willems, robinson, flannagan
    CB
    agger, vlaar, sakho, coates
    MF
gerrard, lucas, allen, fer, shelvey, henderson, coady, adorjan
    W/WF
    suarez, downing, ramirez, sterling, suso
    FW
    borini, bellamy, carroll, rhodes, morgan
