Liverpol Fans Must Remember Loyalty Is A Two-Way Street

DANIEL Agger doesn’t want to leave Liverpool Football Club.

His manager doesn’t want him to leave Liverpool Football Club. His team mates don’t want him to leave Liverpool Football Club.

And yet Fenway Sports Group’s stance that the player will be sold should an acceptable offer be made from the other end of the East Lancs Road is seemingly okay with some people.

From a purely business point of view, selling Agger for huge financial gain makes some sense. He’s 27 years old now, he’s missed a hell of a lot of games for Liverpool over the years with injuries and his market value is higher than it has ever been. Morally though, any Liverpool fan advocating the sale of Agger is skating on thin ice above the waters of hypocrisy.

Forget for the moment that this is a world class player in his prime who could be fundamental to Liverpool’s progress this season. Let’s look at the Agger case from a personal point of view. This is a man who has repeatedly stated his desire to stay at Liverpool, the club he loves. He recently got a tattoo of ‘Y.N.W.A’ on his knuckles as a reminder of what the club, its fans and his adopted city have come to mean to him. He is settled on Merseyside and has no desire to play for any other English club. He is essentially saying that he would rather stay at a club who have their work cut out to reach the Champions League over the next few seasons than move to Manchester City who are almost guaranteed to provide him with winners medals and a hell of a lot more money than Liverpool. He is exactly the type of throw-back loyal servant that fans bemoan the rarity of these days, yet some people are fine with the notion of him leaving if the price is right. It is indicative of the way the game is these days.

When Fernando Torres sought pastures new, Liverpool fans to a man were outraged. How could a player so beloved and seemingly in tune with the club turn his back on the Kop? Well, now they have their answer. It is not only players who lack loyalty these days, but the clubs and fans also. Agger’s latest interviews while on international duty with Denmark make for depressing reading. He is unequivocal in his assertion of wanting to stay in every answer yet he has to repeatedly throw in the caveat that, should the club wish to sell him, his hands are effectively tied.

It is a sad situation and should serve as a reminder for fans to be realistic the next time their star players wish to move on. Why should players have any loyalty to clubs when they can be sold at the drop of a hat like cattle at market as soon as an offer is made that is deemed ‘too good to turn down’?

Players with a fierce devotion and love for a particular club are all too few in numbers these days and should be cherished and held on to. Here’s hoping that Daniel Agger’s own loyalty is repaid by Liverpool and he’s wearing red and not blue in the coming season.

“yet some people are fine with the notion of him leaving if the price is right. It is indicative of the way the game is these days.”

It isn’t. It’s because it makes sense. He’s replaceable at best and has to be replaced at most.

Get over it! And let BR invest it in sturdier players.

    • Bill says:

Will you be saying that when the defence comes apart at the seams? Skrtel and Reina rely on him, he’s the rock they’re built on. It’s no good getting players in to score more goals if you’re shipping them at the back. Supporters like you we don’t need.

      • Callaghan says:

How can they rely on a player who is injured half the time? It’s media addicts we don’t need. Agger is a class player but he’s injury prone.

And who are you to dictate what type of fans ‘we’ need? lol

        • CL says:

if i don’t remember wrongly, most of his injuries stem from his back, which he had an operation to solve it. He was out on a fractured rib last season, yes? any one could have fracture a rib falling from a chair, unless we have adamantium plated to our bones. which top team do not have worries of injured defenders? if he is fully fit and played for the whole season, he is class. remember, upcoming and talented youngsters are may consider leaving due to lack of playing time.

        • Shehzard says:

@callaghan: He’s a much better option than Carragher or anyone else on the bench, doesn’t matter even if only appearing half the season, he’s been more than a handful in the past two seasons. And clearly you sound like a band wagoner, it’s quite the shame you are fan Because we at Liverpool, back the team at all times and let the management do the selling.

        • Callaghan says:

          @shezzard

We have Kelly & Coates. The bandwagoners are people like you. If we keep Agger for another 5 years he will cost us £100k/wk in depreciation alone, add his wages on top of that and you have maybe £160k/wk for 125 games if we’re lucky…

…it works out at about £41 MILLION, if you think he’s worth that much then your eyes must be painted on!!!

And for your information I back the team at Anfield every week and cheer our players on, it doesn’t mean I have to be financially backward, common sense must prevail. I’d support LFC if we were non-league, I was born a red.

Did it escape your attention that we almost went in to administration not so long ago?

    • Matu says:

You’ve obviously missed the point by a country mile.

Clearly Torres was thinking it made sense to go to Chelsea, we were replaceable with Chelsea fans.

How about showing a player who loves the club some loyalty like was asked for from Torres.

      • Callaghan says:

I’m right on point, old fruit. Trying to draw parallels with Torres is very wayward.

Agger is at peak value. Can you say he is as good as Sami Hyypia?

        • Ryan says:

van persie had always been injury prone, but he was never considered by wenger nor their fans as expendable.because 1.They knew on his day he is almost unstoppable 2.They could never find a good enough replacement for him, had he been sold. same applies to agger, but sadly some fans seem to think he’s expendable. we need to show the same respect and support to agger, that he shows this club. I for one think,he is the most consistent and reliable player in our squad, and selling him should never be an option

      • Callaghan says:

        @Ryan

Agger is a great player and consistent when fit but he is replaceable and unreliable. If he’s loyal, get him on a pay-as-you-play contract. Kelly and Coates are very good players and able replacements. That is why I’d take the money and run. See my earlier point, if we keep Agger for another 5 years it will cost us £40m+, you could double the capacity of the Annie Rd end for that money, making more room for all these super loyal internet fans we have.

  • shibashis says:

BR does not want to let him go, this is a player who is an absolute gem to have in your team, footballing capability wise he is great, passion, commitment and desire, do we need to say anything about these traits in him?
it is a shame is what it is, one would think that the liverpool way was about loyalty, but today of course all that will matter is business, even to the fans. Such a shame.

  • Alali says:

No matter what BR should not sell him, he is an important member of the squad…YNWA

  • Andrew says:

Firstly am I the only one who thinks this guy is a wum? Liverpol??? Would any LFC fan make that mistake? I think not! I’ll quote

And yet Fenway Sports Group’s stance that the player will be sold should an acceptable offer be made from the other end of the East Lancs Road is seemingly okay with some people.

Some people, yes because if you asked 250,000 reds 5 might think roy hodgson was a successful manager at Liverpool! Please listen to the fans, Daniel’s name was chanted loud and proud against Gomel, the message we want him to stay!

From a purely business point of view, selling Agger for huge financial gain makes some sense. Please name these so called fans, are they anything like 10% of the comments made about Dan? I would seriously doubt it!

    • Callaghan says:

Sell him for £25m and buy him back for £5m next year when they’re fed up of his sick notes.

      • chan says:

        @ Callaghan

Yes we get your point, you shares the same philosophy with a certain London club, whose board’s motto is Buisness first, club and trophies second.

We are LFC and our MOTTO is YNWA. Does it mean anything to you? Selling Agger, might or might not make buisness sense bi=ut from a footballing point of view, selling your ball playing defensive key player at his prime, does it makes any footballing sense?

The player himsel does NOT want to go to MC, despite instant riches and trophies. That says a lot of his character, despite not born and bred in Liverpool.

FSG should not even THINK about selling Agger unless they want to send the signal to players nad fans that we are all too happy to be a feeder club, just like that London club. Maybe its good you switch your alleagiance too, since you both have much in common.

        • Callaghan says:

What a fool. Did you cheer his red card yesterday? So, now when he isn’t injured, he’s banned.

His red card may have been harsh but to me, it’s karma. ***WE*** should have took the money and run…

Oh, and for any other muppet deciding who is allowed to support which clubs, give us a break. I was born a Liverpool supporter. I didn’t have to look on a map or at a trophy cabinet.

Not every supporter has to like every player at their club. It all smacks of herd mentality to me. In fact, even on this very page I’ve got people telling me I’m following the crowd by wanting to sell Agger and some saying I don’t fit in to the crowd 😉

  • KeithVon says:

    Here here!! Well done mate.

This is a yardstick moment for FSG. Whether or not Agger’s dispatched will tell us all we need to know about FSG, their priorities and their understanding of the sensibilities of British football.

Next thing we’ll read is that FSG are thinking of selling the naming rights to Anfield.

    Oh wait a second…

    • Callaghan says:

      Rubbish. You’re an Evertonian right?

FSG probably woke up to the fact Agger has just peaked and it is foolish not to cash in on an injury prone player.

      • chan says:

You are probably one of those who yelled bloody murder when Torres wants away to Chelski. Boy and look at you now.

        • Callaghan says:

Boy, look at you… wanting to play guessing games. doh. You probably supported chelsea last month

  • Nigel says:

What I dontbunderstand and never will is why would a team sell their better players to teams in their league that are rivals? Why would you strengthen your opposition? If I was an owner or manager I certainly wouldn’t do this!!!!!!

    • Callaghan says:

Perhaps it is because they know he’s unreliable?

      • shibashis says:

One wonders if you have a personal agenda against Agger, its just that your comments give that impression, I am sure you do not though.

        • Callaghan says:

No, not at all. I really like him as a player. He really is a class act. However, he’s not a £20m+ player considering how many games he misses.

I’m confident BR can use that kind of money to improve the first eleven overall.

I want us to really have a pop at the league this season and who’s to say Agger won’t be on the operating table after a few games?

Due to his injuries, he can only be considered a squad player — Kelly and Coates can share the roll comfortably, imo.

If Jay Spearing gets LFC tattoos from head to toe should he be the first name on the teamsheet?

The pillock who ealier said the club doesn’t need supporters like me must be on crack. I wonder if he owns action figures of Konchesky and Poulson? He may wish to consider Shankly’s attitude toward injured players… Shankly wouldn’t give them the time of day. Buying players while they are injured also ticks me off.

        • chan says:

          @ Callaghan

Hmm then what is youir thoughts on Stevie G? His missed a lot of games this past 2 seasons you know, should we as per your suggestion, offer him a pay as you play contract?

Yeah, have you got anything personal against Agger?

    • Callaghan says:

Yes, definitely pay-as-you-play for Stevie G. I don’t have anything against Agger. I simply believe he’s replaceable. I’d have taken as little as £10m for him. He’s a very good player but replaceable. Get over it…

  • Matu says:

    Great article mate, spot on.

Andrew, I’m guessing “Liverpol” was a typo – quite an easy one to do.

As for people saying we should sell if a big enough comes in – I’ve heard plenty of Liverpool fans saying it online.

    • Callaghan says:

Matu, if it was your business and you were offered £25m for an injury prone player… doh!

His replacement will be cheered :-)))))

      • chan says:

        @ Callaghan

If we all view this solely as a buisness, we would not be supporters at all. You mean all the time and money spent just to watch our beloved LFC without a Prem title in more than 20 years and who finished 8th last year?

Your love for this club is only at the buisness level and nothing more? Boy, some fan you are

        • Callaghan says:

Not at all. Just sensible. I have a season ticket and I’m entitled to an opinion.

You’re presuming I view it all as a business, which is blind stupidity on your part.

I cheer the team on as much as the next supporter but I don’t have to love every player or believe we need every player.

Did you know about Kelly, Coates or Wilson? Or are you too busy polishing your Konchesky and Poulsen action figures? lol

  • Credos says:

Shame how the Football of this genaration has turned into a business..The love is slowly fading.

Soon we’ll be having Scripted matches just to generate an Audience.

    YNWA Agger!!!!

  • hyperbeat says:

Let me see if I understand all you so called fans who are in favor of selling Agger. The argument being it is ok for the right price,. Staying with that argument should we then also sell Gerrard? Thought so – of course not. You keep your class players as long as they have something to offer. And don’t tell me this is any different Gerrard spend quite a few months being out with injuries.

    • Callaghan says:

Injury prone players are disruptive. Look at how Shankly dealt with them.

The fans who would sell Agger are simply being realistic. Gerrard has hardly kicked a ball for 2 years by the time he comes back, he’ll be ready to retire.

If these players are so loyal to us, get them on pay-as-you-play contracts. They’re mufti-millionaires…

      • chan says:

Good, does this applies to Stevie and Carra too? Love to see how you would tell them this to their face.

        • Callaghan says:

lol hilarious. I’ve met Carra more than once (ps. he isn’t a sicknote like Agger, so your point is way off base there). Will Agger reach half as many appearances as Carra? Doh.

If you knew anything about Stevie, you’d know he doesn’t like the general public as much as you do…

          You’re definitely a child, Chan.

  • imoff says:

Some decisions are made ,but not for football reasons, as in the case of Agger he was never worth 27M, City saw the man’s class last season and want him , and if they meet the price then the Club might sell him and make a profit.I believe though that we may find it very hard to find an equally defender of Agger’s class and stature within such a short time and cheap too, because i don’t believe we have a ready replacement from within the Club .

  • freddy says:

it really was surprising for me too, when i kept seeing fans wanting to sell him. i sufficed thinking it was a bunch of senseless foreign kids. but it really is alarming,

especially when this man is so much devoted and loyal to this club, he deserves so much more respect. The fact that he is world class and even barca has been chasing him, just tells the story, it could only be our loss

  • shibashis says:

    @Callaghan :
“If Jay Spearing gets LFC tattoos from head to toe should he be the first name on the teamsheet?”
That is the whole point is not it? We are all at pains to point out that Agger is not Spearing, Agger is a real class act fit to wear the reds shirt. Barcelona are not interested in Spearing, are they?
A player whom the manager wants to play, a player who wants to stay himself and loves the club, should not be sacrificed in the name of ‘business’, more so because all believes that he can contribute a great great deal in the club’s journey to the top again. It perhaps was allright at City or Chelsea, but in my mind certainly not at Liverpool.

    • chan says:

Spot on. Agger is a much better player despite his injury record

      • Callaghan says:

Yes, that is the case but Spearing _really_ wants to play for Liverpool. If he gets a YNWA tattoo how can you deny him? You must be heartless and hate players who really want to play for the club

    • Callaghan says:

I wonder if Agger will reach 20 games for us this season?

Hopefully the club will successfully appeal his red card.

  • sondre says:

I live in Norway and Liverpool is the best team EVER but Manchester BUUUnited is very good so Next time Liverpool and Manchester United Plays together most Liverpool look out for Rooney!

  • sondre says:
