A Better Partnership Than Carra & Sami?

LIVERPOOL Football Club’s Spanish goalkeeper, Pepe Reina, has backed current central-defensive pairing Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel to become one of the greatest partnerships in the Anfield side’s history.

Both Agger and Skrtel have recently put pen to paper on new long term contracts on Merseyside, contracts that could see them come close to reaching a decade of service for the Reds.

At 27 years old, both are experienced, seasoned international players with their respective countries, Denmark and Slovakia, and both are entering their peak years in terms of playing professional football.

Reina, the man who plays directly behind them week in and week out sees no reason why they can’t go on to emulate or even surpass some of the great partnerships that have gone before them such as Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com Reina said:

“It’s good they’ve signed contracts because it’s a fact that they are one of the best centre-back couples in the Premier League, the understanding between them is great and they’ve been really solid lately. In the last year and a half or so they have been brilliant for us.

“It’s great for the club and I’m happy for them that they’ve got new deals.

“If I am not mistaken they are similar ages to each other, so they have five or six years still to play their best football. I don’t see any reason why they can’t do the same as Carra and Sami did, though they were one of the greatest centre-back couples this club has ever had.”

Reina himself is recovering from a slight hamstring strain picked up whilst on international duty with Spain last week. Whilst his absence from the Europa League clash with Anzhi was confirmed in the Reds 1-0 win, it is thought he should make a recovery for Sunday’s Merseyside Derby at Goodison.

Hyppia and henchoz were a good pairing too. The defense has really tightened up in the last few games, lets hope it continues. Well done to Brad Jones aswell, he has been a rock in Pepe’s absence
