Greatness Lost? Under Rodgers It Is…

“TO finish as high as last season (8th place) or better would be a fantastic achievement” – Brendan Rodgers.

When I saw this headline in one of the morning papers I had to pinch myself. That had to be a mistake; a misunderstanding or something else, but not true! But unfortunately it was.

In May King Kenny was sacked due to a not good enough league position, despite winning the League Cup, getting to the FA Cup final, having third best defence in the league and playing some of the best attacking football in the league.

It was hard to take, but at least it showed ambition to move forward up the league.

Surely if you replace a manager you want his successor to improve on his results, not the contrary!

The problem with Rodgers, in my opinion, is that he’s a small team manager not suited to a big club like Liverpool. He doesn’t seem to understand that praising some non-existing ‘domination’ in a three-nil loss, ‘courage’ of a backpass to an opponent, or constant complaining about referees is nonsense at the top level.

A total of three wins against three relegation favourites in the first dozen of games, the same amount of clean sheets, total dependence on one player in attack and a bottom-half place with third of the season gone. And worst of all, the ambition is 8th place. Is there anyone who can help Rodgers with packing?

I know that sacking a manager is always a major shock for the club, but I think that it’s not too late to save the season yet. Rodgers did his best to offload good players and replace them with Swansea calibre types, but LFC is big enough to correct this mistake.
[ad_pod id=”liverpool-tees” align=”center”]
King Kenny spent £35 million (net) to have a big squad that gave him lots of depth and delivered the first trophy in seven years. The football was there, a cup was in the trophy room, but league results weren’t.

Rodgers spent £25 million (net), showed the door to cup-winning players and failed to replace them, constantly complaining about how young and small his squad is, never mind it was Rodgers who made it this way. Poor results, lack of ambition, and constant moaning. The great club is losing its ‘greatness’ and I don’t know why the decision hasn’t been made yet.

I would show the Ulsterman the door, then the club has to ensure the right decision is made; no more experiments with Championship level coaches, please. Give the job to a man who knows the club inside out, won major trophies with it, played under one of the two greatest LFC players ever and has been vice-captain to the other. Jamie Carragher won’t let the greatest club in the world lose its greatness. It’s his flesh and blood.

absolute crap.every point crap.are you a manc in disguise?

    • ferdia says:

only mancs would support rodgers , this article is spot on

    • Chan says:

      Well said Ferdia.

KD was an unmitigated disaster last season, after spending more than 100 mill (i am not into this net spent garbage)he though winning some minor cup would do it despite us finishing 8th.

Frankly i was shocked by BR’s appointment. It kind of cement many of our suspision that FSG is happy just to have us as also rans and all this talk of competing with the very best is just that, talk, which by the way Americans are very good at. At least they have something in common with their countrymen and our ex-owners H&G, making empty promises.

If you want to compete with the best and bring back our glory years, appointing someone who had just 1 year of top flight experience, had never won anything in his career, tends to inherits things (like he did with his ex Swansea team from Martinez and our youth players from Rafa) and whose most notable success is writing 180 pages dossiers that does not actually spelt how to win football games seems to be a very strange way of achieving your aim.

The author is right. BR keeps moaning about the squad but he himself made it that way. He can blame FSG for the Carroll-Dempsey fiasco which he is right of course but who let AC leave without securing CD in the first place? Also why show Kuyt and Maxi the door when we still needs them?

We should not be surprise that we are languishing at 11th. Look who is the owner now and who is the manager.

      • steveO says:

I agree with you Chan , something must be done -Rodgers must be sacked , he has done nothing to deserve this job . And he has done nothing to deserve this idiotic faith some people seem to have in him

    • TheFlyingPig says:

This article is rubbish, give Brendan time you can’t keep sacking managers.

  • yuvank says:

U r right a manger was brought in to improve . Thin squad is his doing , had to ensure the squad was large enough before selling. At the end , it wiil i didn,t hve the same amount for transfer as Kenny, he overspent on mediocre players tho on this issue i do agree but if he goes for swansea players obviously LFC will achieve the same level as swansea

  • dale london says:

Well if talking out of your a**e were an Olympic event, you’d have to be my nomination for Team GB.

I’m not even going to begin to dissect this waffle as it’s so full of it that it’s not worthy of my time.

    • Tommo says:

Icouldnt agree with dale more this article is an absolute crock of it, your facts and figures are at best inaccurate more likely plucked out of the air. At the start of rodgers appointment it was stipulated that this would be a building process not to expect too much this season. we dont need fans like you supporting our great club, of course its frustrating not challenging atm but to be honest we havent been where we expect to be for many years. Glory hunters such as yourself can go an support chelski or sh*ty

      • Simon says:

passive idiots who are happy in midtable should go and support sunderland . fool !

      • Shane says:

if the fans aren’t going to be demanding, the yanks wouldn’t mind us sitting in midtable as long as they make profits. We have a good enough team that could be on the top end of the table if not for the imcompetence of the manager.

He simply tries to do what barca does. i mean how on earth would you justify playing Henderson or Downing as wingbacks. the reason he stated was that barca plays Alba as a wingback. what he doesn’t get i presume is that he’s being playing in that position for more than 4 seasons now. he’s small club manager and will always be one.

      • Chan says:

Tommo, i think you are in the wrong fan page. Go look up at some mid table Championship team or something.

You mean we should just be happy with a mid table finish and let FSG and BR off the hook?

    • fotheringham says:

smeg head . go support a london team, your stupid comments are not wanted

      • dale london says:

I’ve come to the conclusion that the level of trolling is directly proportional to the amount of fear that exists in our rivals. Truth is with the exception of two premier league games we have dominated games. True we have not been as dominant in cup games, often as it’s when first team players have been rested.

Rafa won the CL with Djimi Traore, Smicer and Kewell. Rodgers in his first few months has succesfully outplayed the top teams with a team sprinkled with teenagers. Given time and belief, this team are only going to get stronger and more dominant.

I guess the real fear and alarm for Maunre, Chavski and the other trolls is that, jeez if Rodgers can do this with such a weak squad, what will happen when he gets some strength in the squad. Me, personally I can’t wait, a return to good old fashioned socialist football is long overdue.

        • wesker says:

you are the dumbest idiot i have seen troll this site for ages
          what a delusional nobhead !
‘ dominated all except two ‘ moron ! start watching the matches not just MOTD highlights
and even IF it was true – so what ? who cares ? its about putting the ball in the net more than your opponent , not who dominates

i agree with above , go support chelsea leave liverpool to scousers , we dont need braindead fools

        • frankie says:

Is this a joke ? Are there really people this stupid as dale is ?

        • Chan says:

Guys look, i am not in agreement with Dale also but cut out the name calling ok? Lets focus on the actual aim, how to get rid of BR and FSG.

        • holly says:

u wouldn’t know truth if it hit u in face dale ! u know nothing about football

  • Dan says:

I could not disagree more about the utter nonsense in this article. What good players did he allow to leave? Aquilani (the one who didn’t wnat to be here and wanted far too much time on the ball)? Carroll (the striker with no EPL goals to his name this season despite starting every game when available)? Adam (don’t even get me started on Adam)!!! This was all rubbish that Kenny paid way over the top for, the prices you can only lay the blame on Kenny and Comolli as clearly a new owner with no background in football is going to take their advisement from those whom they employ as professionals. It’s all fine and well saying “you need to buy new players before letting all those mentioned above go”, but that is nonsense and doesn’t happen in the real world. We would have had a bigger wage bill than United and Chelsea! We had 3rd highest wage bill in leage under Kenny with nothing to show other than a carling cup win. As nice as it was, that is not sustainable. The only way forward was to remove the rubbish from the wage bill in the hope that a season with a small squad and blooding youngsters would pay dividends, and to me, it looks like it is! 8th isn’t the extent of Rodgers dreams, Rodgers is saying that having a higher placed finish than last year with a much smaller squad, many of which are teenagers is impressive when the year before we had supposedly a squad of first class full internationals. A top 6 finish this season is a good season. Next season, with a full season under the belts of Sterling, Suso and Wisdom and a couple of signings that Rodgers will only be able to make because he has reduced the wage bill sufficiently that we can now afford them, we will see a much improved reds side and much closer to the top four. I’m a much happier man for having the likes of Sterling and Suso in the side than Downing and Adam. Rodgers over Kenny any day (this is not a Kenny bashing exercise, he’s a legends who’s done more than any man for the club)!

    • Caster says:

total rubbish . sack BR the worst manager in Liverpool histiry now

    • Micah says:

No matter what the situation is, if being 8th is satisfactory, you don’t deserve to be leading this great club. He’s got a small team mentality. Does he think this is fu*kin swansea. If the coach has that mentality so would the players. He needs to fu*koff!

    • frankie says:

keep dreaming . dont you think we will win champions league too ? utter nonsense post

    • Chan says:

Dan, i totally agress with your take on Kenny. As i said so many times, KD’s misadventures would set us back for years to come. Unlike you, i can’t respect that sorry excuse of a man no more. His one season in charge wipes out whatever good he had done in the past. That is the extent the damage he had done to this club.

Also, i can’t agree with you on BR. Finishing 8th? Really? With a team still able to call upon class players such as Gerrard, Agger, Skrtel, Johnson, Reina, Suarez and now Sterling, we should just aim for 8th?

Wow, looks like FSG and BR is succeeding in their effort to bring us to mid table mediocority. Even some fans are starting to believe this. Thank god we still have Carra.

      • steveO says:

Way too harsh on Kenny , He took responsibility for transfers because thats the kind of guy he is , however what was comolli doing ? I bet Comolli was responsible not kenny . Anyway the man is a hero on and off the pitch ( post hillsborough especially ) . he deserves loyalty and respect

  • Tim Williams says:

    playing devils advocate here:

What are realistic expectations this season?

when answering consider the squad we have at present, the low ebb in confidence and form carried over from the previous year, any new manager not just Rodgers having to come in and stamp his approval on a squad and seperate what he considers the wheat from the chaff

  • Tom says:

You are talking utter Kak. You sound like you support another team and that you are simply trying to sow the seeds of discontent. If that is the case then you know what you can do…..If not then you have no sense or understanding of what has been going on at lpool up to now and what needs to be done going forward.

  • bob.. says:

I rate this site highly but this article is a major step down..so what should he say..liverpool would make top 4..we both know there is a very slim chance..he is just trying to lower expectation, that doesn’t mean he and the owners haven’t spoke about it..and don’t give me that net spent crap kenny spent 100m,rodgers spent 30m period!!!.why didn’t you say it was kenny who laid the foundation for our problems…except 4 kuyt, bellamy and maxi who left on their own,he got it spot on showing them the door..why have players who don’t influence results and just keep getting paid.

  • NJRedsFan says:

Alright Nicky Cuzin (really?), as noted by almost every response prior, you’ve wasted our time with this farce. Please do not do so anymore. Also, you might try posting on more timely issues, can’t imagine what took you so long to produce such a poorly thought out argument.

  • Simon says:

Totally correct Nicky , Rodgers must be sacked before he brings us even lower . Small club may suit him but not LFC . We should not accept top 8 only

  • mcshattery says:

Nicky Cuzin is an absolute bell end.

  • Erin says:

I said give the man 10 pl games. The man is out of his depth. Unfortunately , he is cosy with the media and talks as much as possible whenever he wins a match. Including explanations as to why Suso was replaced etc. Rogers sold, maxi, Kuyt Bellamy . ( ok bellamy for family reasons ) that’s 20 goals. Replaced with one Borrini.
Look at the transfers we were saved from. Dempsey? Spurs fans will drive the guy to anfield . Sigurson? Allen? Borrini? What do they have in common? All played under him. Rogers can not be trusted with pulling a deal off. His football knowledge is very average. And by end of the season, we will collectively want to boil your heads in water.

  • Caster says:

excellent article . 100% coreect . the only writer here to speak truth

  • Oruno michael says:

Simeone your not a liverpool fan, you better leave rodgers let him do what he knows how to do and do it best.

    • simon says:

He is doing what he does best – ruining a football team , ask Reading fans or have you even heard of Reading where your from ?

      • frankie says:

Reading gave him 23 games , he has had 23 games for us and a worse league record
Are Reading owners smarter than Liverpools?

  • Erin says:

Rogers haven’t invented the wheel. Wake up guys. He sound more like David Brent every time he speaks. Look at how magnified a victory at anfield becomes. It used to be small page, nothing unusual, no extensive manager interviews. Now we are lucky to win at home. Wake up please. Keep the morron to the end of the season. Then kick him out. I hope he takes over Man U and makes them a laughing stock. Somehow, he will end up in the championship

  • stevieG says:

I think only mancs or everton fans want us to keep this loser . His signings are crap , he doesnt know how to win matches , he plays boring patient football , he messed up our cup chances last night
Only for Suarez being in the best form of his career , we would be way lower . No top player will come in january with this muppet in charge
    SACK HIM NOW

    • Micah says:

i’m pretty sure the reason the yanks opted for this fool was because he could be just a puppet. not demanding any bit. the reason why Hernandez did not join was that. this fool is so full of incompetence.

      • Erin says:

Couldn’t agree more . Fans started to turn on this guy after the worst start on records. I said , wait another 5 then give a verdict. Well, he is a media merchant with a grandeure complex. Worst of all he believes he is so so marvellous . Reminds us when he wins as often as possible

      • Chan says:

You have it spot on Micah. Those Yanks know by reapponting Rafa they would not have an easy time as Rafa would stand what is good for the club, not the Yanks.

BR is the perfect candidate, a puppet manager.

  • Mr Ed says:

It is a pity but everything this writer says is very true . Mr Rodgers is way out of his depth . Virtually all his decisions have been poor and his brand of football is not exciting in any way . We at Liverpool must set the highest of standards and anyone not living up to them needs to be replaced

FSG tried an experiment , it has failed , W e desperately need a proven experienced manager now

    • Erin says:

Hmmm, no money right now . Let him struggle till the end of the season and then I would ask him to explain himself. This guy produced a 200 page dossier!!! It will be over 1000 with excuses.
Reminds me of someone who is awsome at getting a new job! Talk for England but sadly gets found out soon.

  • Huyton Dave says:

” To finish as high as …. ” That sums up brenda . small man , small expectations , go manage a small club you waster

  • Sam says:

GET RID – pleeeeese he is useless

  • Mitch says:

Absolute drivel of an article. Same old low iq football fan who actually knows nothing about football! Which ‘top’ manager do you think would come to us? Mourinho? Guardiola? Dream on! And for anyone thinking Redknapp…what has he ever done? Even England didn’t want him! Rodgers worst manager ever? Have a word with yourself! Hodgsons football style was awful! Rodgers has got the team playing some very nice football just needs to get the finishing sorted.
Sayin, Allen are good signing! assaidi looks promising. Borini not that impressed with as although good movement…no eye for goal. However Daglish had a mare! Downing? Henderson? Carroll? Overpriced and underperformed! Adam I was undecided as he had long injury.
As for not having passion, Rodgers has displayed passion for the history and the fans…check your facts first! Even watch the programme on Channel 5 if you might want to use ‘some actual examples’!!!
As for Carragher he’s still playing, he says he’s not ready to retire yet. Plus he’s had NO managerial experience! In time…maybe.
We’ve been waiting since 1990 for consistent performances to challenge for the league…22years! I”ve waited that long I can wait a couple more years and give Rodgers a chance! What good is constant chopping and changing especially as we don’t have the money of Chelsea or Man City.

I hear there’s a job going in Eastern Europe if you’ve played enough Championship Manager!

    • Erin says:

There was one top manager unemployed.

      • Mitch says:

Who was that? and do you…
        1) Think that they would’ve signed?
        2) That Liverpool didn’t try speaking to them?

        • wesker says:

he is obviously talking about rafa , someone with your lack of football knowledge shouldn’t troll a site like this

    • kellogg says:

go ‘support’ somebody else , you dont know anything . total ignorant fool

      • Mitch says:

Definition of SUPPORTER…”To give aid or encouragement to a person or cause”. Bad mouthing the manager or the team instead of getting behind them is just plain ignorant!

        • wesker says:

‘supporting’ a manager that is hurting and ruining our club is detrimental to the club

YOU are clueless and very ignorant

    • trance says:

@mitch – if i was as stupid as you i would smash my face off a wall , and talk thru my arse for the rest of my days ~ then we would have something in common

      • Mitch says:

Thank The Lord we’ll never have anything in common, I think a primate who’s had his brain removed would have a higher IQ than you. But try speaking through your arse, it might make you more bearable to those unfortunate to have to share the space which you occupy!

    • frankie says:

I agree guys , mitch is a fool or probably just some kid so go easy

  • Bibengbad says:

Oops. First and only visit to this particular site. I read the article and was disgusted enough to consider a constructive reply, but then read the carp ‘fans’ like Erin and simeone have written. I’ll leave you all to it.

    • Mitch says:

I agree with you. I wish I’d have had the foresight to see that it would just end in an argument with abusive morons. C’est la vie!
