Learn from our mistakes & ensure this doesn’t happen again!

THE Northern Echo, a newspaper closely linked to Middlesbrough, recently reported that the Championship side were interested in taking Stewart Downing on loan from Liverpool.

The player himself has privately taking a liking to this idea in a bid to get his career back on track, however, what benefit would a loan deal have for Liverpool?

Too often in the past Liverpool have agreed deals with other club which, on the surface, look to have had no great worth to the Reds and this potential loan transfer for Downing seems to fit into that category almost perfectly. Liverpool paid a princely £20million for the left-winger and should realistically be looking to recoup as much as that as possible and as soon as possible as it clearly hasn’t worked out for Downing at Anfield as he continues to frustrate whether it be on the left side of midfield or in his new role – left back.

With a loan deal worth no transfer fee whatsoever to our club and also with the England international currently on the receiving end of a lucrative contract, it is almost a given that a Championship side would only be able to afford a fraction of that wage. Even if Downing does go away and impress for his hometown side during the remainder of the season, when he returns he will be 29 and, therefore, his value will naturally depreciate.

Liverpool FC and Brendan Rodgers need to learn from the clubs previous mistakes and especially those that are pretty fresh in the memory. Two recent examples would be that of Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani. Cole left for France last season and spent the campaign at Lille but, despite an above average season, came back with almost no value whatsoever and a mammoth wage demand – one which no club were willing to take on and his lackadaisical performances still haunt our weekends to this day.

A similar situation came about when former manager Roy Hodgson decided to loan out another of our £20million recruits Alberto Aquilani to Juventus and, following an up and down season, the Italian returned to Anfield with the club still actively searching for somebody to take the midfielder off their hands permanently. However, no club were willing to take a gamble on him and he went out on yet another season-long loan; this time to AC Milan. Eventually when he returned to Anfield again, the club managed to sell him to Fiorentina for a small percentage of what they had originally paid for his services.

If Liverpool send Downing out on loan they are almost certainly asking for the same treatment they received for Aquilani and should expect to take a massive hit on the outrageous price the club paid for Downing a few summers ago. Rodgers is desperate for cash to sign a striker so selling the likes of Downing and Cole would be an ideal source of finances for him to be able to bring in the striker we sorely need.

January will be a fascinating month for Liverpool Football Club and it is who comes through the doors of Melwood that will inevitably interest fans the most. Nevertheless, it is who leaves for good that is equally as important as FSG further tighten the purse strings as we enter a period of ‘balancing the books’ under our American owners.

We seem to be in “desperation” stakes like any lower division team these days. This is supposed to be what we all wanted with new owners? A joke to a football club indeed.

      • You heard says:

I agree simon… also get enrique out of there. glen johnson where he has enrique and play wisdom at right back. get suso in there for allen. even then we are sooo young and prone to mistakes….

What worries me the most is, the position we would be when the Transfer window opens, the likes of Huntelaar wouldn’t want to come to a team that’s languishing in mid table, they’d rather join Everton or Spurs than us.

We need to be atleast above seventh place to have any hope of attracting decent talent. what’s the point of bringing in another B Borini or Allen, when they are clearly not a step up of what we already have.

    • kirbyking says:

True . Why would any decent player want to come now ? We have tight blood sucking owners and a clueless imbecile of a manager

  • kirbyking says:

Why cant people see , that what really needs to happen is – we must get rid of the evil yanks who are over here to take our money
    FSG OUT

  • Davina says:

All negative comment`s so far. We are Liverpool Football Club so get behind the team, manager and owner`s. We deserve better,it just doesn`t happen overnight. Yes there are player`s who shouldn`t be wearing our shirt,it`s not simple as just getting rid of them so we have to use what we`ve got. It`ll take time but we`ll get there,i`m sure.

    • harry86 says:

yeah sure ! wake up and smell reality

      • Matt says:

I agree with Davina, to many negative comments. I believe in Rodgers he needs time install the players but I do think the owners should contribute more funds to the club. We need to get behind the manager with Lucas back Allen will move further up the pitch and I’m excited to see what he can do. They need our support stop talking all this negative crap, the same results were happening when KK in charge.

        • simon says:

erm , NO . last season dec 1st ,we were 5th in the league and still in league cup . Allen is one of the worst players ive seen play for LFC – the more time rodgers gets the worse he will make us

        • Matt says:

That is only three players Borini, Assaidi and Allen, KK; Hendo, Downing, Carroll, Coates, Adam all useless players all ridiculous prices that’s bad management. BR has had very little funds he’s been left with deadwood. Give him more time.

  • sleeps with angels says:

I aint sleeping mate am wide awake and can see that what you say is 100 per cent correct, yanks out!

  • harry86 says:

Loaning players out is a waste of time and money as 3 years of doing it with Aquilani and last year with Cole proves .
Rodgers will probably do it cos he doesnt have a clue

    • Matt says:

We’re you saying the same thing about King Kenny when he was in charge? The same story happened last season, dominated games but no result. Stop bagging out Rodgers, he’s doing we’ll with what he’s got.

      • Andy , durham says:

LOL ,LOL ,LOL , are you insane ? or do u not watch the games ? ‘Rodgers is doing well ‘ ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
who gives a fu*k who dominates games , its all about results fool
        What a moron u are

  • murt says:

Loaning out Downing is an option i suppose ,we still need to rid ourselves of Cole & Hendo ,Borini may still come good when he returns.Sahin should be sent back to real madrid,i dont see what he contributes at all for what he,s costing.Sterling appears to be asking for a shit load of money,in fairness he is young & has potential but he aint worth that much twine.BR is probably the right man but its going to be rough sailing for a while,The Yanks also have to be realistic & draw a line between what they require as owners & what keeps the fans dreaming of glory days

  • Geoff007 says:

Rogers is a disgrace to our name , to our history , to everything good about LFC

  • Only i can say all those who’re only here to critisize the owner manager and players might be they aren’t Liverpool’s fans or know nothing about football there ‘s a time to critisize it’s better to find solutioms to resolve the facts or to loss everythings we have we must be more respectfull for them they are doing the best it’s not their fault, after all we must take great care before making comments it’s better to calculate good for the futur not becoming unfortunate

    • Jack66 says:

I Think its better if we did not have fans like you , and if this isnt a time for criticism , when is ?

Liverpool fans should not just sit back and accept , while these goons destroy our club
