Torres To Return?

THERE have been numerous whispers lately of a possible return of Fernando Torres to the familiar shores of Merseyside.

The Spaniard has reportedly grown tired of the constant frustrations he has faced at Chelsea since his move in January 2011 and, if you are one to believe newspaper reports, his overwhelming desire would be return to the club where he made his name in English football – Liverpool.

Ever since he put pen to paper on a lucrative contract at Chelsea, costing their owner Roman Abramovich a princely £50 million in the process, Torres has never lived up to the expectations placed on his head and some feel that the pressure has got the better of him during his two years at Stamford Bridge.

After scoring 81 goals in 142 games for Liverpool (approximately a goal in every 1.75 games), Torres has only managed 19 strikes in 86 matches for Chelsea – which works out at roughly a goal every 4.2 games. When you compare the two records it is quite astounding how the mighty Torres, once the number one Premier League striker who struck fear in the eyes of every defender, has fallen to become just an average forward who can only manage 10-15 goals each campaign.

The big question for every Liverpool fan, however, would be (if he decides he wants a return to Anfield): would you take Torres back at Liverpool? It is a mammoth ‘if’ at this current moment because, with all things considered, it would take a momentous effort to get Torres back with Chelsea likely to want to recoup a significant percentage of the £50 million they shelled out for his services.

In addition to this, there are a few factors that would have to come into consideration before a move for Torres would be sanctioned. Primarily, would he fit into Liverpool’s current setup? Now that Luis Suarez has found his shooting boots we have a goalscoring striker but there is no doubt that another natural finisher wouldn’t go amiss at Anfield. Brendan Rodgers, nevertheless, deploys a system where only one out-and-out striker would start from the beginning and it would be a difficult decision to leave either Suarez or Torres out of the team. If Rodgers chose to start both Suarez and Torres, would they work well together? Are they too similar?

One of the most important aspects of the move would be whether Liverpool would be able to afford the transfer fee that Chelsea would inevitably demand from any potential suitors and with Torres just four months away from turning 29 it is not a given that Liverpool’s owners would be willing to part with anything more than a paltry amount for a player they would consider to be entering the final years of their career.

For Liverpool fans this point would be the most important one of all – can Reds supporters forgive Torres for how he left Liverpool two years ago? The Spaniard’s attitude in the last few months of his spell on Merseyside proved that he did not love the club as much as he had previously stated. His sudden move at the end of the January transfer window also forced Liverpool into panic-buying Andy Carroll for an outrageous transfer fee in a desperate attempt to replace the outgoing striker.

With all these questions asked, it is still a million miles away from Torres ever returning to Liverpool; but there is still a possibility. Mr Torres didn’t know how good he had at it Liverpool and has since realised this, whether he admits it publically or not. There is no doubt that if he chooses to leave Chelsea, a move back to Merseyside would be high on his list of priorities, however, there are many factors to consider before our old number nine from ‘sunny Spain’ makes the transfer that would shock the world. What would you do? Give us your thoughts.

His ‘advisors’ probably instigated the move and he got his head turned by the mega money from the little London club with a Billionaire owner. Since going there he is obviously demoralised and misses playing for a Big club.

  • redrum says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!

  • Bill says:

We’d be daft not to have him back on a free or nominal fee. I’d also bring in Rafa to mentor him. There’s no doubt he could play Rodgers system (he’s Spanish).

    • redrum says:

are you insane ?? really are you ? chelsea are going to let a 50m player go free or cheap ?
bring back rafa ? as what ? the janitor ? just to give torres advice ? ive seen some stupid posts on here but yours is a contender for dumbest

      • monami says:

Dumbest of all time, infact dumbest hall of fame

      • NJRedsFan says:

Agree with you Redrum, Bill let his optimism get carried away. As romantic the notion of seeing Nando and Suaerez play together, it will never happen. I don’t think Sturridge is the answer either.

      • charlie says:

granted bringing rafa back is dumb, but bringing torres back on the cheap is not. After all noones going to pay top dollar for him and keeping him will cost even more money for chelsea.

this is all immaterial though, he’ll go back to athletico on a swap deal for falcao…

  • steve says:

I would welcome him back. You can’t forget how great he was for us when he was here. Sure I was pissed when he went to chelsea, but we did get 50 mil for him and bought Suarez with some of that money. I think that they could work together if Torres would return. We could have Torres up top and Suarez right behind him in a more creative role.

    • Stuart says:

Correction – the Suarez deal was already lined up before he handed his transfer request in. We bought Andy Carroll with the Torres money. I agree I’d take him back though for the right commercial deal for the club.

  • Jack The Lad says:

Even if he was free I wouldn’t have him back. It’s best for all concerned to move forward, but in different directions. Buying him would have too much risk attached for BR someone frech and new for an new future is what is required. I also think a lot of the players at the club wouldn’t want him back. Carra and Agger always had a swipe at him since he’s left.

  • Towson Tom says:

We are looking for a striker capable of 20 -25 goals a season, sadly Nando is’nt that.

  • Eoin Fitz says:

I would take Torres back Gerrard and Torres were one of the best partnerships I’ve seen in the Premier League, as for working with Suarez it was the original plan for Suarez to partner Torres. Playing Torres up front with Suarez on the left and Sterling on the right could fit in well with BRs playing style. I’m a fan who keeps the mantra You’ll Never Walk Alone so I bear him no ill feelings. Nostalgia aside I doubt he’d return to Anfield and a swap deal for Falcao seems too good a deal for both Chelsea and Torres and Atletico to let slip, but as ever in football (as Torres’s departure from Liverpool shows)anything can happen.

  • Darren Adams says:

The reason Torres is not playing as well as in the past has nothing to do with the club he plays for. The simple reason is he isn’t as good as he was. He has never been the same since he insisted on going to the World Cup injured that has left lasting damage. He has lost that explosive speed he had in his first two years at Liverpool. Now defenders catch him when he’s through this was happening in his last 18 months at Liverpool. If Liverpool never wasted 35 million on Andy Carroll it would have been the best bit of business we had ever done getting rid of him as 50 million for a past it player with a selfish attitude is the stuff managers dream of. Liverpool should be looking for a player with his best years ahead of him not Fernando Torres .

  • Andoo says:

I still love him. I still wanna see success in him wherever he go. But he is almost 29 years old now. 8 to 10 million pound will do. More than that i think better don’t.

  • vishnu says:

God Plz make this happen ‘m waiting for that movement so if this happens and after that if he continues to score again means then only the greedy footballers in the planet will believe what liverpool Will give for their players that others clubs wont……………True love.

  • Malaysian Reds says:

101% no. There’s no chance for this greedy man!

  • EddieC says:

Never going to happen, I can see him leaving Chelsea soon but there will be a premium if we want to buy him back.

Suarez seems to have come into his own anyway since playing as a lone striker, what we want is someone who can play on the wings most of the time but is capable of covering for Suarez in the middle.

  • steve says:

i for one would love to see him back in a red shirt, the grass isent always greener on the other side wich he now nows for sure and i think he would love to come back and it wouldent take him long before he got going, just think torres and suares playing together at the top of there game, would frighten the life out of any team but will the owners go for it,lets hope so

  • Orbunde says:

I am not in support of bringin him back cos there are still big money clubs around us let him be

  • Ray says:

The guy is a traitor and a money hungry scumbag there is no way back for Torres at Liverpool he made he’s bed now he can lie in it.

    • Finn says:

I agree with no traitors back

    • DaveWestAus says:

He was never a traitor. The owners wanted the 50mil they new they could get for him! They forced him to ask for a transfer by leaving any recruitments until the last few minutes of the transfer window! They new they would make a big profit out of his sale!
HE DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE LFC – HE WAS FORCED OUT !!!

  • Elias says:

DRIES MERTENS.!!!.can be the real deal

  • kunle says:

….We’ve kept the few olds because of their loyalty to the club and experience, the new era scout for the youngs and not those out of their primes.

  • Ray says:

The day he left Liverpool for chavski he said he was leaving for a bigger club with ambitions. For saying that he can never be forgiven or return to Anfield.

  • NJRedsFan says:

Torres did burn the bridge, would upset tje locker rooom too much. As said he is not, nor will he ever again be the player he once was.

  • bryan says:

The owners would not consider him because of his age and I agree he let us down and he will never be forgiven for that
