Torres To Return?

THERE have been numerous whispers lately of a possible return of Fernando Torres to the familiar shores of Merseyside.

The Spaniard has reportedly grown tired of the constant frustrations he has faced at Chelsea since his move in January 2011 and, if you are one to believe newspaper reports, his overwhelming desire would be return to the club where he made his name in English football – Liverpool.

Ever since he put pen to paper on a lucrative contract at Chelsea, costing their owner Roman Abramovich a princely £50 million in the process, Torres has never lived up to the expectations placed on his head and some feel that the pressure has got the better of him during his two years at Stamford Bridge.

After scoring 81 goals in 142 games for Liverpool (approximately a goal in every 1.75 games), Torres has only managed 19 strikes in 86 matches for Chelsea – which works out at roughly a goal every 4.2 games. When you compare the two records it is quite astounding how the mighty Torres, once the number one Premier League striker who struck fear in the eyes of every defender, has fallen to become just an average forward who can only manage 10-15 goals each campaign.

The big question for every Liverpool fan, however, would be (if he decides he wants a return to Anfield): would you take Torres back at Liverpool? It is a mammoth ‘if’ at this current moment because, with all things considered, it would take a momentous effort to get Torres back with Chelsea likely to want to recoup a significant percentage of the £50 million they shelled out for his services.

In addition to this, there are a few factors that would have to come into consideration before a move for Torres would be sanctioned. Primarily, would he fit into Liverpool’s current setup? Now that Luis Suarez has found his shooting boots we have a goalscoring striker but there is no doubt that another natural finisher wouldn’t go amiss at Anfield. Brendan Rodgers, nevertheless, deploys a system where only one out-and-out striker would start from the beginning and it would be a difficult decision to leave either Suarez or Torres out of the team. If Rodgers chose to start both Suarez and Torres, would they work well together? Are they too similar?

One of the most important aspects of the move would be whether Liverpool would be able to afford the transfer fee that Chelsea would inevitably demand from any potential suitors and with Torres just four months away from turning 29 it is not a given that Liverpool’s owners would be willing to part with anything more than a paltry amount for a player they would consider to be entering the final years of their career.

For Liverpool fans this point would be the most important one of all – can Reds supporters forgive Torres for how he left Liverpool two years ago? The Spaniard’s attitude in the last few months of his spell on Merseyside proved that he did not love the club as much as he had previously stated. His sudden move at the end of the January transfer window also forced Liverpool into panic-buying Andy Carroll for an outrageous transfer fee in a desperate attempt to replace the outgoing striker.

With all these questions asked, it is still a million miles away from Torres ever returning to Liverpool; but there is still a possibility. Mr Torres didn’t know how good he had at it Liverpool and has since realised this, whether he admits it publically or not. There is no doubt that if he chooses to leave Chelsea, a move back to Merseyside would be high on his list of priorities, however, there are many factors to consider before our old number nine from ‘sunny Spain’ makes the transfer that would shock the world. What would you do? Give us your thoughts.

I would prefer to bring him back. With the combination of Suarez and Torres in front and Sterling or Assaidi, there will be fire in the camp of their Opponents. I’ll pray for BR to get him but at a price of 10 to 15 Million, not more than that.

He is still a threat, but he is not used as he was used at LFC. If you look at all his Interview, he always talks of LFC. He still love the club. We all make error and it is human. He thought money was big thing and now he realise the mistake he has done and he want to repent. I will forgive him and take him and once he regain his confidence, you will see what damage they will do to other teams.
