Two attacking options would be a perfect fit at Liverpool FC

THE January transfer window is set to open in just over seven weeks and Liverpool Football Club are in need of some additions to bolster their attacking options.

Several strikers have been repeatedly mentioned as possible targets for the Reds in the January window, including Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Theo Walcott, however, at this point all the talk is mere rumour and speculation, and it remains a mystery just who exactly Liverpool’s transfer targets will prove to be.

After offloading Andy Carroll to West Ham United on transfer deadline day and failing to bring Clint Dempsey to Anfield as a replacement, Liverpool’s attacking options looked, on paper, scant at best. Since then, Raheem Sterling has emerged as a first team regular in the front three, alongside Suso, with Luis Suarez in the central role. Suarez’s all round form has been magnificent; he’s bagged 11 goals in all competitions so far and 8 in the Premier League, as well as creating a chance every 31 minutes.

Sterling has been a revelation and adds pace and trickery to the attacking trio, however his youth sometimes affects his decision-making in the final third and, although he’s registered 1 Premier League goal, it’s unrealistic to rely on the 17 year old as a regular goalscorer just yet. Suso has been thrust into the first team, usually playing on the right of the front three, for the most part due to Fabio Borini’s foot injury. The Italian hasn’t enjoyed the best of starts to his Anfield career and still faces the best part of six weeks on the sidelines.

Borini was signed for his clever movement and eye for goal; his role is to make clever runs in behind Suarez, into the space vacated by defenders tracking the Uruguayan. Suso is being deployed in a similar role, however, that’s not the young man’s game and, despite not doing badly for a young player suddenly pushed into the limelight, he doesn’t look quite ready for the first team and in any case isn’t going to chip in with too many goals as yet.

Liverpool need a striker or, to put it better, more attacking options. Suarez has nailed down that central role, the false nine position (as it’s alluded to these days), that has been made famous by Barcelona and Spain over the last six years or so. For me, there’s no better player in the Premier League to play that role. Suarez is quick, fantastically sharp and intelligent, skilful, has great vision, is incredibly hard working and has the twin abilities to both score goals and create chances in every game that he plays. Brendan Rodger’s mentioned him in the same breath as Lionel Messi recently and, in my opinion, there’s no other footballer in the modern game that Suarez can be legitimately compared to.
[ad_pod id=”liverpool-tees” align=”center”]
There are differences of course; that Messi is deadlier and more composed in front of goal is the most obvious difference between the two. However, if you look at the way the two of them play the game, their dribbling prowess, the way they both drop deep and get involved with setting up chances, their ability to see things that other players can’t and to always be three or four steps ahead mentally of the players around them, and the fear that the pair of them instil in opposition defenders, then the similarities really come into focus.

So where are Liverpool now? The Reds obviously need goals, someone to take the burden off Luis Suarez who, at the moment, is creator and scorer of most of Liverpool’s goals. Lucas Leiva is set for a return to first team action, hopefully by the end of the month. His return should allow Gerrard to be moved to the apex of the midfield three or into the front three; a move which will lift the pressure from Suso’s shoulders and should pay dividends in terms of scoring goals. Gerrard has only two goals to his name so far this season; although he plays well in a holding role, Gerrard is unquestionably one of the Reds’ most lethal finishers and it’s hard to accept that Liverpool are getting the best out of him when he’s not scoring goals. Take the Newcastle game for example; Jonjo Shelvey had three gilt edged chances after coming on as a substitute for Suso. Not to put too fine a point on things but if one of those chances had fallen to Gerrard, Liverpool would likely have won the game.

Pushing Gerrard forward, along with having the added bonus of Lucas back in the team and a fully fit Glen Johnson should strengthen the Reds quite considerably, however, even once Borini returns to full fitness, Brendan Rodgers will still need more potency up front. Klaas Jan Huntelaar has been touted as a possible target for the Reds. The Dutch striker scored 48 goals in 47 starts last term and has started this season in the same rich vein of form.

Huntelaar played with Suarez at Ajax and the pair enjoyed a prolific partnership before the pair went their separate ways. So, is a reunion on the cards? Well, we’ll have to wait and see. Huntelaar’s contract runs out at the end of the season and, as such, rumours are abound that he’ll be available on a cut price deal in January – however it’s not cut and dried that he’ll leave Schalke.

Although there have been many reports that Huntelaar is desperate to come to England and ply his trade in the Premier League, the truth is he may just be after a huge new contract with his current club. Huntelaar is 29 and as such this will be his last major contract, he’ll want to make sure he gets as much as he can out of it. Schalke currently sit second in the Bundesliga and, after emerging unbeaten against Arsenal, look set to make the knock-out stages of the Champions’ League; will he really want to leave them? If he does, will he want to move to Liverpool? Will the Reds meet his wage demands? All kinds of questions are abound and according to Bild, a German newspaper that is quite reliable in its Bundesliga knowledge, Schalke are set to offer the Dutchman a bank-breaking new deal in the coming weeks.
[ad_pod id=”unruly-video” align=”center”]
Theo Walcott is another name that has emerged as top of the list of rumoured LFC targets. Walcott was apparently close to joining the Reds under Kenny Dalglish, and was reportedly still a target for Brendan Rodgers in the summer. His contract situation with Arsenal has been well documented and he will be a free agent in the summer. The Gunners stance has been somewhat odd because, for my money, they can’t really afford to lose him. A bit part player left on the bench for the most part this season, Walcott has impressed when called upon, scoring a hat-trick in the League Cup win over Reading and notching in the 2-2 draw away at Schalke. Walcott is a Liverpool fan and it’s thought a move to Anfield would please him. However, he’s thought to be asking Arsenal for wages of £100,000 a week and I wonder if Liverpool would be prepared to offer him that.

Walcott would be another good acquisition. He offers real, genuine, lightening pace, the kind of which LFC don’t possess, even in the case of Raheem Sterling, who is quick. Walcott’s job would be to run into the spaces behind Suarez and stretch defences whilst linking the play and providing the third prong of a fluid, pacey attacking trio. There has been criticism of Walcott’s inconsistency at Arsenal but, for me, he’s never really fitted into Arsene Wenger’s side. Rodgers’s Liverpool may well prove to be a better fit for Walcott to realise his huge potential, especially when you consider he’s approaching the peak of his career.

Both of these players may prefer to play centrally in an old fashioned system – Huntelaar because it’s where he’s always played and Walcott because he’s repeatedly called on Wenger to move him inside. However in Rodgers’s fluid system with Suarez playing the false nine role, it may not be a problem fitting either one of them in. Huntelaar has played with Suarez before and the pair could likely find their roles together quite easily. Walcott would likely play from the right but in a much more narrow sense than he has done during his time at Arsenal. He’ll constantly be asked to make runs in behind the defence, rather than hugging the touchline in a more traditional wide role.

To conclude, I’d take either of Walcott and Huntelaar (assuming that FSG won’t stretch to both, something I may be wrong about). Both bring excellent attributes in their own right and both offer Brendan Rodgers’s Liverpool elements which they lack at the moment. It seems to me more likely that Walcott will be available as it’s beginning to look like he’s burning his bridges at Arsenal, however, this is football and the only certain thing is that nothing ever is. If truth be told, we don’t even know if these two players are legitimate targets. What we do know though, is that Rodgers will be making additions in January, with the primary focus on adding goals so, if the Reds can still be in touch with the top four come the end of the Christmas schedule, fans can look forward rip roaring run-in.

i really think the first step or signing should be huntelaar since there were both team mates in Ajax and the really understand playing together. Huntelaar IS a goal scoring machine in shalke. about walcott coming to Liverpool is a great idear by Brendan be course we can see the fastness and great skill he has moreover he a young talented player and a good feature ahead of him. with the most important problem in the club, the defenc line we need a good left back. with all this i think LFC. will be fantastic and able to com-peat for the top four this season

  • marco says:

yeah right , like FSG are going to pay for top players and why with no champions league for this or next season would they join us

  • kay says:

We can talk tactics, money, players, formation,JW Hendry, but, ultimately if we don’t bring Rafa back or another coach of his calibre,we will just remain a mid-table club. Since 2000 it has been realised in football that you can no longer keep a manager for future success, cos what happens after 5yrs if it doesnt work out? Do we start another 5yr project. Rafa won the CL in the first season,Pep won the double,Jose,Klopp,Wenger,Ancelotti to name a few. Guys like Fergie(going 5yrs without silverware, yet having the best budget) would never make the grade in the current game,he still be working somewhere in his hometown… So why as LFC are we trying to be a grooming arena for an unexperienced guy like Rogers? He should do his time like Pep did at Barca and understand the game more thoroughly,no disrespct to Rogers, but, WE ARE LIVERPOOL!!!!BESIDES ANY COACH THAT IS FERGIE-FRIENDLY IS JUST NOT LIVERPOOL… IF FERGIE DOESNT MIND YOU, YOU NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!

    • pepe says:

Rafa? Rafa? You are still going on about Rafa!!!

How much did he spend and what did he get out it?

      • marco says:

spent damn all net , won trophies , made us great again . u got bad memory or something ?

anything is better than the amateur in charge now

  • leem says:

Or you could be realistic, its no coincidence his still out of a Job,don’t get my wrong I love him for what he did for us, but do you really want to make the same mistake we did with KD, we need to move stop living in the passed with Rafa, his gone get over it. Klopp would not Leave Dortmund now seriously, Wenger Fergie, the managers you mentioned were given time to be the managers they are. It is not realized in football that you cannot keep a manger for the future? You just made that up, how long did fergie, moyes wenger, klopp get to get player they wanted in and implement there plan? Plus to bring someone new now would mean more funds being pumped for a new manager new system, what would that be now our 5th manager in 6 years? Lol some supporter you are, coz that would take liverpool back another 2 3 years.

    • marco says:

rodgers has taken us back over 40 years till the last time we were a mid table no hope outfit

plus rodgers is already wasting what tiny money we have . 28m in the summer – all wasted on poor signings

  • leem says:

Poor signings? Like who? Assaidi? Allen Borni? How long do you give a player before you rate him poor, under 10 games in a new club, that’s how long you’ve given them. Mid table? We’ve been a mid table club since Rafa left, you got bad memory or something?

    • marco says:

anyone can see those 3 are poor players . and yes 10 games plus is enough . we are liverpool not coventry , u shouldn’t get tons and tons of chances to prove yourself . our standards should be higher

we weren’t mid table under kenny , we were just outside top 5 and doing well in cups . rodgers has brought us to new depths of mediocrity

  • leem says:

I couldn’t agree with your more that our standards are high and should not accept mediocrity, not Liverpool, all I’m saying is that Rogers inherited a team that ended 7th we won the Capital one cup, its hardly prestige, even Birmingham won that cup before, to call that success is sad, nobody care who lost the FA Cup, mind you it’s so early we have to start that competition. If you want to speak about poor signings then I’d mention Carrol, Henderson, Downing, Adam, 100 million down the line we ended 7th.That is simply not good enough.

  • leem says:

Regardless of the net, I understand the bulk of his funds were made up of our sold player(s), the point is that the fund made available were used to pay Cole’s ridiculous wages, Heno, 35mil Carrol, 20 mil Downing, Adams, etc, I’m not slagging Kenny or the players but the reason we are in this position is not due to Rogers, the blame cannot be solely placed on him. So what if we end up 7th and win the FA Cup? You cannot know for sure how the season will go, it’s way to early to sack him. If however we how much do you think the next manager will get to fund his new squad? How long do we give him? Which manager will join knowing that his only got 11 games to prove himself? What player join Liverpool with this way of conducting a football club? It’s not realistic to simply say sack rogers and throw money at the new manager.

    • wesker says:

Erm yeah its BRs fault . KD had decent team unlucky to only get 7 . BRs had 21 games . Hes useless
Under your way , if we are playing badly and cant win ? what ? stick with it ? thats stupid . BRs made us a joke , Go see what other teams r sayin bout us . Hes bought nobody good and let good players go . Sack him and hire someone with a track record

  • leem says:

Wesker, Kenny had a decent team? That’s a joke right? Nothing else you say now will have any value, I’m sorry if you think we had a decent team and we were unlucky all season.

  • Francis says:

Last years team waaaaay better than this team . Get Rodgers out quick

  • leem says:

If you think maxi is better than Sterling and kyut is better than Suso and henderson is better than allen, you have no clue, add to that Assaidi, for cole? Then you have no clue.

    • Francis says:

you really are a dumb MF ! look at the table fool . cole wasnt even there last season . henderson wasnt playing in useless allens position , maxi wasnt anything more than an occasional sub .

you dont know f all about liverpool . you have just shown how stupid and ignorant u are . well done

    • shabib says:

yes u are stupid ,u dont know football maxi ,kuyt , bellemy , caroll, adam ,we miss .
alenn, assadi , borini sahin are not good . get rogers out

  • leem says:

Look at the table when the season ends, don’t be so quick to judge, you the idiot if you think last years team was better, the team formation was not the same so it can’t really be compared, Allen is playing out, of position, you ignorant for wanting Rogers out this early, it will only put us further back rebuilding another team with another new manager with lack of funds that you’ll want sacked after a few poor results ,if you fail to see any positive this season then you just a bitter old miserable man living in the past, move on or shut up, nobody will sack Rogers just coz you unhappy,

    • bob says:

its ignorant fans like you that are holding the club back . you would have us waste years waiting for a unproven manager who is clearly out of depth . any muppet can see last years team was better both in formation and in personal . you have already proven your lack of knowledge with your 7.24 comment , we really dont need uneducated and apathetic fools like you dragging our club down , if your happy waiting years for the smallest possibility os success then YOU go support someone else

    • steveO says:

I would prefer Kenny and Kennys team easily

    • simon says:

Dumb- ass . If Rodgers gets sacked , maybe nobhead supporters like you will support a different team hopefully

  • leem says:

How could my opinion hold a club back how can fans that support their manager and team hold a club back, that makes absolutely no sense so you’ve already proven yourself an idiot in the first line, regardless if you think last years team is better or not, they not here are they? Changing a manager every season is not healthy. I’ve supported every manager and liverpool team in my time, I’ll continue to do so coz I’m a supporter, I have every right to get behind my team and to my opinion coz I actually attend games, I haven’t missed a game in 5 years, I have a vested interest and love for Liverpool. Keep supporting last years team or teams of the 80’s or when ever you remember being happy. If You’d rather have aging highly paid flops suck us dry and win the Capital One cup every year then so be it, the likes of sterling wisdom and suso would have been long gone if Spendy was still in charge. if the players that decided to extend there contracts can see the bigger picture then why can’t you?

    • Turner says:

Fool . Moronic blind fans that follow like sheep are a curse to any club . I too hate fans who happily follow any no mark

    • bob says:

people like you make me laugh . ” havnt missed a game in 5 years” ha ha . there is no way anyone with your basic lack of knowledge of the club goes to any games .

my 8 year old knows cole wasnt there last season , he knows henderson didnt play in allens position ,and allen is not playing out of position thats where he played for swansea , he knows it was downing not maxi playing in sterlings position last season .

so many people ‘claim’ to go every week its hilarious – stop pretending .you are the type of casual supporter who , if FSG hired mickey mouse to manage us next year , you would think your a great loyal supporter for supporting him and pleading for him to get years .

i suppose you supported hicks and gillet . and thought hodgson deserved more time . your not from liverpool , you dont go the games , get lost
